Formalin is the trade name for an organic compound made by formaldehyde and water. It has the chemical formula CH2O and its chemical structure is as shown in figure.1.
Uses:
Formaldehyde is used mainly in the production of plastics (such as urea-formaldehyde plastics which is used in many manufacturing processes due to its useful properties such as flexural modulus, and a high heat distortion temperature, high surface hardness, low water absorption, high tensile strength, mold shrinkage, elongation at break, and volume resistance), leather industry as an essential raw material, synthetic fibers (such as polyvinyl fluoride “PVF” ), medicine (for example it is used for the Treatment of mild tinea pedis), dyes, etc. Formalin has anticorrosion ability, In addition, formaldehyde can be directly used for disinfection, sterilization, …show more content…
Structure of the world capacity broken down by region, 2012.
THE LARGEST MARKET FOR FORMALDEHYDE IS CHANIA, ACCOUNTING FOR ABOUT 34% OF WORLD DEMAND IN 2011; THE UNITED STATES, CANADA, BRAZIL, GERMANY, THE NETHERLANDS, SPAIN, ITALY, BELGIUM, POLAND, RUSSIA, JAPAN AND THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA ARE OTHER LARGE MARKETS. CHINA EXPERIENCE FAST GROWTH RATES (AROUND 7% PER YEAR) AND SIGNIFICANT VOLUME INCREASES IN DEMAND FOR 37% FORMALDEHYDE DURING 2011–2016.
Formalin in Saudi Arabia?
SAUDI ARABIA IS ACCOUNTED FOR 85% SHARE OF THE OVERALL METHANOL MARKET IN MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA WHERE ABOUT 40 PERCENT OF IT IS CONVERTED TO FORMALDEHYDE. . IN 2012 THE CAPACITY OF METHANOL IN SAUDI ARABIA WAS 716,820 TONS. SINCE SAUDI ARABIA PRODUCES METHANOL IT WILL BE CHEAPER TO USE IT TO PRODUCE FORMALIN
METHODS OF PRODUCTION
Formaldehyde is known to be one of the most reactive organic compounds. It can be produced by various reactions. It can produced by methods such as: Methanol undergoes an oxidation reaction in the presence of catalysts, ethyl-alcohol, coal gas, ethylene, methane, glycol, glycerin, and carbon
