Outside the diner, a black pickup rolled to a stop while I peered out the window at the drizzling rain, a constant in the sleepy little town of Forks. If I were honest with myself, I didn’t believe that he would show up, even after conceding to meet him at his request; however, there he was getting out of his truck, striding determinedly to the diner’s door. Shortly after the bell over the front door jingled, he stood next to my booth at the back of the diner at our appointed time.
“You showed up.” I glanced up from my lunch before shrugging my shoulders nonchalantly, since I was never easily impressed. “Apparently, you truly do have something to say so take a seat and spit it out.” My hand raised another bite of my steak to my mouth as he

“I know your concerns for Bella’s welfare, emotionally and physically, and rest assured that I will do my absolute best to be exactly what she needs, and never leave her. I love Bella too much to do that.” Ending his declaration in a near whisper, his true intentions and the depth of his feelings for her made obvious for anyone to witness.
“And are you convinced that she will say yes?” I replied with a hint of concern as I finished my steak and push my plate away, since I wasn’t completely convinced that she would agree. “She wanted to marry Edmond, but we both know how that ended.”
A wry smile crossed his face, apparently, he approved of my opinion of her Ex. “Sir, even though he was a fool for the way he treated her, she knows that I am nothing like him.”
Finished with my meal, I sat back in my chair, keenly scrutinizing the young man in front of me with my police gaze, mostly to give myself a moment to think. After considering his reply, the thought popped into my head that maybe I was mistaken in ever comparing him to Edmond.
“You do understand if you ever hurt my daughter, there’s not a force on this planet that will stop what I would do to you, do I make myself clear?” I leaned forward, my eyes staring directly into his, so that there was no mistaking the truth behind my
