Forgotten Scientist Who knows about the first scientist to synthesize natural products? Who knows who made the foundation for the cortisone? That man was Percy Lavon Julian, an African American chemist and pioneer. He was one of the most important scientists known to date. Percy was born on April 11, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama. His mother was a school teacher and his father was a post office clerk. Attended DePauw University in 1920 and his mentor William Blanchard and was the one who tried to find a doctorate program for Percy after he completes his undergraduate degree. He was a chemist, pioneer, and civil rights activists who stand for the symbol of justice and peace. He wanted equality for all man and believed that no matter what the color of your skin was, each individual should be treated equally with empathy and respect. His accomplishments were beyond outstanding and are now used today for numerous purposes on this earth. The reason why he was called the “Forgotten Genius” was because of his ability to accomplish all of these tasks and being able to make so many of these experiments become useful with real world applications in life. But he was neve r mentioned until later because of his ethnicity and skin color. Back then, they didn’t like to see African Americans succeed and surpass Caucasians back then. During this time was a time of racism and hate, which was why he was never given credit nationally and fully until later years. His usefulness has been overshadowed by the racism and politics of society during his time, but eventually he will be recognized as a commonly known scientist and chemist very soon. It is a matter of time before he gets the recognition he deserves. That is why is known as the “Forgotten
