In the beginning of the novel, it is clear that Amir is jealous of his servant, Hassan. Amir believes that his father, Baba, gives more affection and attention to Hassan and he yearns for the same amount of love. Due to the fact that Amir truly believes Baba does not love him nearly as much, he begins resenting Hassan more as he grows older. His actions reflect this jealousy because throughout the boys’ childhood, Amir often tries to belittle Hassan in various ways. Amir does these cruel actions so often because he feels it is the only way to make himself feel better. Most often, Amir is jealous of things that Hassan has no control over, for example, Hassan’s harelip: “I wished I too had some kind of scar that would beget Baba’s sympathy. It wasn’t fair. Hassan hadn’t done anything to earn Baba’s affections; he’d just been born with that stupid harelip” (Hosseini 46). This quotation demonstrates Amir’s hatred towards Hassan, which is driven by nothing other than his jealousy. Once Baba pays to have Hassan’s harelip fixed for his birthday, he wishes he too had a scar so his father would treat him just like Hassan. Due to the fact that Amir finally begins letting his jealousy and resentment towards Hassan control his actions, once he grows up, he is unable to forgive how unfairly he treated Hassan. He believes that …show more content…
In this particular dream, Amir is haunted by the memory of Hassan telling Amir that he would do anything for him and is reminded once again how unfair Amir treated him. This phrase, “For you a thousand times over” always haunts Amir’s mind because he remembers how in the past, he would not have done the same for Hassan because his jealousy often ruled his decisions. Once Amir grows older his thoughts often remind him that he often took advantage of Hassan’s kindness, and in this dream, this regret is represented by the fact that Amir is the one to kill Hassan. Although it is not a pleasant experience, the memories that habitat his mind are the main reason Amir can finally move on from his

Although it seems to be a relatively short period of the story, the relationship that Amir has with Hassan as a child, defines the rest of his life. The two boys seem to be best friends growing up, described by Amir’s many fine memories of their childhood. However, Amir often mistreats Hassan in a passive-aggressive manor because he is quite jealous of the attention he gets from Baba, as he often feels he is not treated equal. This is demonstrated when Amir teases Hassan asking him “What would you do if I hit you with this [pomegranate]?”(97) This behaviour proves Amir’s jealousy, and also shows that although the two are best friends, he seems to display racial inequality at times, thinking that Hassan is a Hazera servant and is therefore beneath him. He fails to display compassion and understanding for Hassan, often making fun of him over things he can’t control, such as his education.…
