Throughout her life, Jeannette has fought numerous fires or battles. One of Jeanette's first memories is being severely burnt after her dress caught fire while she was cooking hot dogs. She was only three at the time. Then the hotel they were living in San Francisco burnt down. While living in Welch Lori gets burnt while trying to light a kerosene lantern and Uncle Stanley burns down the house after falling asleep while smoking. Jeanette surprisingly does not develop a fear of fire but instead, cannot stop watching or playing with it. “I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes.” Jeanette also overcame the fires of homelessness, starvation and abuse. She fought the fires with a fighting spirit, and just like when she burned herself as a child, she pulled through. As Rex said "'She already fought the fire once and won'" (15).

The visual is a good example of Jeannette and her life. She was constantly fixating on fire, playing with fire and dealing with the affects of a fire. Looking at the picture you can see a person on fire and yet she is not destroyed. Jeanette was not destroyed by the fires in her life

Jeannette Walls earliest childhood memory shared within her book, The Glass Castle: A Memoir, is of her getting taken to the hospital after getting caught on fire while cooking hot dogs for herself as a three year old. According to the doctors she was “lucky to be alive” (Walls 9), and was left with a permanent scar from a skin graft. Living in a trailer in Southern Arizona with two siblings, Lori and Brian, and her Mom and Dad, Jeannette was considered, “mature for [her] age” (Walls 9), making meals and entertaining herself. Her father, Rex Walls, broke her out of the hospital without paying the bill and brought her home after a few days, where life resumed as normal, and Jeannette remained unshaken by fire, having already, “fought the fire once and won” (Walls 14).…

9, The Glass Castle) is Jeannette’s child-like phrase she uses to describe how they were running from “FBI agents who were after [Rex]” (pg. 9, The Glass Castle), but the audience learns that the father did not pay taxes, and used that as an excuse to constantly move and not be tied down. The lack of stability in Jeannette’s life leads to a sense of lacking, especially for Lori. Lori often feels out of place and unable to “fit in” with the rest of the family, as Jeannette and Brian find it to be an adventure. However, once the family moves to Welch, Jeannette takes on clear responsibility through how she “looked after his kids all summer, kept him in beer and cigarette money, and helped him fleece that miner Robbie” (pg. 136, The Glass Castle). After her father doesn’t acknowledge how much she did for the family, Jeannette decides, “like Lori, [she] was going to get out of Welch” (pg. 138, The Glass Castle).…
