Concerning the circumstances in the story Sunflower: On the Possibility of Forgiveness, the possibility of forgiveness will vary based on the individual in question. In modern society, any being characterized with having a relation to or sympathy for the Nazi party would most likely be mocked or looked down upon, as it is our way of giving punishment to the misdeeds of the past. In reference to the Fascist regime’s social persecution of the Jews, one could even call this “an eye for an eye,” but in the situation of giving forgiveness to a single soldier, one who seemed to truly be repenting, everything becomes much more complicated. It would be easy for most to say “No, I won’t forgive this person,” from a literary standpoint so as to seem

Simon Wiesenthal’s memoir, The Sunflower, told the story of Simon when he was trapped in a concentration camp. During his time in the camp, he was told to make a decision of forgiving a SS officer. An officer who Wiesenthal was contributing to his daily torture. Instead of verbally saying he forgave Karl, Simon implied his forgiveness by staying silent. I agree with Wiesenthal’s actions because I have relatable instances from my life that make it understandable.…

Eva Kor - a survivor of the Holocaust and a twin experiment survivor - is one of the less than one percent of people that forgave someone who did harsh and unforgettable things to her and her sister Mariam. In the excerpt from Simon Wiesenthal's The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness Karl asks Simon for forgiveness. Simon got up and left the room without saying anything to karl, but He still forgave him by going and talking to Karls mother as mentioned by Arthur Hertzberg. Simon didnt go tell his mother about all the horrible things he did to the Jews instead he talked to her about how as he was dying he asked for forgiveness. In my opinion that shows Simon forgiving him. Simon also wrote a story about Karl and if Simon didnt forgive him he wouldn't have published a book about Karl.…

As Hester and Dimmesdale walked through the forest talking, Dimmsdale recalled to Hester “I could recall one instance of peace or hope.” Dimmesdale stated that because “ he was asking for forgiveness.” One reason Dimmesdale had asked for mercy was because he got sick and wanted forgiveness for what he had done. In “The Sunflower”, the soldier only admits his sins to a Jew, who he thinks represent the whole Jewish population. This Jew does not represent every Jew in the world, included who the soldiers has killed, so he does not have the right to forgive the soldier for what he did to other Jews. Because of those reasons, I would not forgive the soldier if I were the…

In the book the Scarlet Letter, a man named Roger Chillingworth left moved himself and his wife to a small New England Puritan town, then left her there to study medicine, before getting to really meet anyone. If someone were to bump into you in the hallway, you might be upset, but you come to a point where you forgive them for the incident. You will probably, at the end of the day, forget that someone even bumped into you because it wasn’t important enough to remember. But would you remember if the offense was the murder and torture innocent people? Simon Wiesenthal asks in The Sunflower, “Moreover, when the killing has stopped, how can a people make peace with one another who moments before were their mortal enemies? What are the limits of forgiveness, and is repentance-religious or secular-enough?…

Interaction My initial response to the concept of forgiveness therapy for abuse survivors was that it seemed counter-intuitive, as it can be perceived to excuse the abusive behavior and invalidate the suffering of the victim. However, this impression fails to acknowledge the therapeutic definition of forgiveness as used in therapy, a release of resentment (Reed & Enright, 2006). Upon review of this definition of forgiveness therapy, I concluded that it was in line with other therapeutic ideals that encourage release of negative thought patterns and encourage the construction of positive thought patterns and behaviors.…

Moreover, when people forgive their offenders, it shows that justice has been served. Furthermore, when people do what is just, by forgiving their offenders, their view of the world will change. One of the reasons why forgiveness and justice go hand in hand is when an immoral person receives retributive justice, it causes people to repent on their wrongdoings thus making them a better person when they’re also forgiven by their victims. Take, for example, the older brother from “What We Plant We Will Eat”. At the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and kicked his younger brother out…

Forgiveness, as seen by most people, sounds simple and easy, but it has a deeper meaning. My favorite quote in this particular story is," '...forgiveness is a decision, not an emotion. '" (Quiñones p.87) I have always viewed forgiveness as a simple, "I 'm sorry", but after reading this story, I have undertaken a new meaning of forgiveness. My first reaction to reading the story was sorrow and anger.…
