A theme is a clear message, a uniting thought, a strong moral. It helps paints the picture of the message the writer is attempting to get across. It determines the purpose of the writing and the ultimate takeaway message. The Kite Runner has a variety of meaningful themes that help shape the story into an account of injustice and recovery. Its main message focuses on the concept of forgiveness being the ultimate redemption. Being able to forgive others who betrayed you shows not only strength but courage. Forgiving yourself however, is the hardest of all. Making amends for your wrong doings is the only true way to forgive yourself and let go of the past. Betrayal, forgiveness and atonement are key themes in the novel portrayed by several characters’ actions throughout the text. Betrayal is a major theme in the book The Kite Runner shown through the actions of Amir and Baba. Betrayal is the breakdown of trust between two parties based on the wrongful actions of an individual. The Kite Runner has three major betrayals that are the cause of the book being written. The betrayals mark the authors guilt and wrongful actions. Firstly, the major betrayal of the novel is the rape of Hussan. Hussan, the loyal servant to Amir and Baba is a hardworking and innocent character. He always shows compassion and friendship to Amir. Amir is an insecure character who has never felt good enough all of his life. He feels blamed for his mother’s death and the disappointment his father places on him.
