His failing health became an outward representation of his sinful heart, and he was plagued by guilt throughout the book because he lived a life devoid of repentance. By the end of The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale realizes that he can no longer live under the burden of his secret sin, so he confesses it with his last breath before God and all of the townspeople. Committing adultery with Hester Prynne was definitely seen as one of the vilest sins in the Puritan community, and Dimmesdale would have faced punishment similar to the sentencing of Hester; however, living with the guilt of his unconfessed sin destroyed him and pushed him away from God with no hope of…

Dimmesdale last words shows exactly why he is wrong and why he deserves to go to hell. Dimmesdale made Pearl and Hester suffer and live as the face of humility among the townspeople for 7 years, and he has the audacity to say that he has suffered even more than Hester. Hester was publicly humiliated, almost lost her own daughter, had to wear a scarlet for 7 years, and was looked down upon her own community for years. On the other hand, Dimmesdale was seen as a respectable and kind person, but he caused all of his guilt on his own because he never confessed. He could have relieved the pain from Hester ever since the day she was put on the scaffold, but he refused to be humiliated among his own people.…

When Hester and Chillingworth are speaking of Dimmesdale, Chillingworth says “his spirit lacked the strength that could have borne up, as thine as, beneath a burden like thy scarlet letter.” (155). What Chillingworth is indirectly saying about Dimmesdale is that his soul is not strong enough to carry the guilt of the scarlet letter like Hester has. This also shows that Dimmesdale is motivated by his guilt to preach a good sermon, but is not able to handle the trouble like he preaches to. Dimmesdale knows hiding his sin is the cause of the guilt he feels, he even is “conscious that the poison of one morbid spot was infecting his heart’s entire substance, attributed all his presentiments to no other cause” (128).…

In the Scarlet Letter, not everybody was forgiven. Dimmesdale and Hester were some of the people that weren't forgiven. The reasons that I am about to state will make it clear to why I believe Dimmesdale, Rodger, and Hester were not forgiven. One reason that indicates that Dimmesdale and Hester weren't forgiven, was when Hester asked Dimmesdale if they were forgiven, Dimmesdale didn't give an answer. Another reason that leads to the conclusion of Dimmesdale and Hester not being forgiven, is that Hester put her letter back on.…

I think that the character, Hester, in the scarlet letter, will be Forgiven as long as she wants to. I think this because she believed that God punished you for your sins, but then, when someone had a new theory that God can forgive you, then beliefs started to change. It was just a common belief for the puritans that God punished sinners and that you could become a sinner from being born. In the story Hester said “thou shalt forgive me”. This means that Hester believes that God will forgive her for any of the sins she might have done.…

In the novel “The Scarlet Letter” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, he explained many things. But one thing he didn’t cover had remained whether or not the characters had received forgiveness in the end, because of this, it led to some very intense dilemmas. I'm here to tell you that they had gotten forgiveness and how they did. For instance one reason I think this prevails that Hester stood in the forest with Pearl and they subsisted in the shadows, but the moment Hester takes off her “A” a ray of sunshine swarmed through the clouds to shine upon her.…

Not only is Dimmesdale overtaken by his sin, but so is Hester and Chillingworth. For example when Pearl is speaking to Hester she says “Mother, the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom.” (pg. 165) This quote clearly states how Hester’s sin, although it has been established by everyone, still haunts her.…
