Forest Hills Drive Reflection

Improved Essays
J.Cole’s album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, both challenged and surprised me. Initially, it was difficult to understand what Cole was going through as our lives contrast so much. For example, in “Adolescence ‘03” Cole considers selling drugs because that’s what everyone around him was doing. Personally, it was hard to relate as I’ve grown up in a safe environment where drug influence is less prominent. Additionally, I was surprised by the lucidness of the album, as Cole gives full disclosure of everything he went through, especially in “No Role Modelz”. I was mesmerized by Cole’s blatant honesty about how he lacked a father figure, but still couldn’t relate to it. I then realized that I needed to understand where Cole was coming from in order

This became highly evident after Cole’s first meeting with Circle Justice. Cole said: “‘My parents don’t have the time of day for me. I’m just in their way, especially since they split up. I believe that Cole Matthews has failed himself. Why I think this is because he had the opportunity to fix himself while he was on the island, but he decided not to. Instead he had done things while he was banished to make himself more angry. In chapter 2 Cole had been given a shelter that would help him survive on the island. His father had payed for it all and that’s what got Cole really worked up.…

Channel Orange One of the artists that has inspired me to produce my own music is Frank Ocean with his second album, Channel Orange. The first time that I ever listened to the album back in 2012, I remember thinking, “Holy shi*t…I have never heard anything like this before in my life.” Telling a song-by-song story, his poetic lyrics about his personal sexuality, strip clubs, pregnancy, wealth, drugs, and corruption show Frank’s slightly strange perception of it all. That is one thing that really intrigued me the most. To have such real-life, and uncomforting situations spilled into a seventeen track album is really powerful.…

On the night of January 28, in 1985 in the 97th General Hospital at a United States Army base in Frankfurt, West Germany, is the birthplace of a man that would soon change the music world forever with his powerful array of lyrical meaning and word play. Also known as Jermaine Lamar Cole, J. Cole’s arguably most popular song, “Love Yourz” not only demonstrates palpable humility in which Cole compares the two types of lives he has lived, but also distress to a belief that this nation has built itself around, the American Dream. Rapping at the age of twelve, Cole’s love and passion for creating music has spurred him to become the harbinger of rap music in today’s society. Living with only his older brother, Zachary, his mother, and only the image…

Lastly, when reading more in depth about the movie, a blogger had stated that Mr. Holland is, “in denial and hopes the deafness will just go away” (Deaf Expressions). Knowing that this is not the case, I feel that this feeling is what makes Mr. Holland’s frustration grow. It is not until, Cole finally has had enough, with his “father brushing him off” (Hegstrom) and thinking that he is “stupid” when he finally speaks up to his father. However, John Lennon’s death had already carried out a lot of emotions, so I feel like it was a good time for Cole to spill out his feelings…

Plotting this particular story was challenging and tedious. In addition to this, “Barn Burning” left me with many unresolved questions. Granted, I am not sure if I overlooked clues which may have answered them, or if this individual story was meant to have unresolved issues. Furthermore, the central theme, though I understand we were not working on the theme, is still a mystery to me. I cannot seem to determine what the author was trying to convey with his contrasting images of fire, metal, and nature.…

Most people would leave to a different state or out of the country and touring around the location they have chosen. If I was given a ticket to anywhere I choose, I would visit the house where my role model and favorite rapper was raised. It might sound unorthodox to visit a famous person’s house but that specific house gave the famous J. Cole his motivation to be the successful person he is today. J. Cole was born in germany inside of a military base, but raised in North Carolina. At the age of five his parents divorced, J. Cole’s mother took him and his brother Zack to a trailer park.…
