The author begins the story by giving the reader a foreshadow. The little kids are picking up stones and piling them up.This is usually made to give the reader an idea of innocence and purity of a younger child. This is later twisted by the turn of events.
The plot consists of the people in the town all gathering around a black box and drawing slips. They all are ordered to open their tickets to reveal a single black dot among the group. The person who draws must then get their family to draw again. The person in which gains the black dot is then stoned to death by rocks. This was predicted through the foreshadowing before.

Mr.Summers and Mr.Graves are an example of irony with their names.Mr.Summers is an indication that the lottery begins during the summer.(July 27th)Mr.Graves is a foreshadowing that the lottery leads to death. This was interesting in the fact that they run the lottery.
The total meaning of the story is what affects readers the most.It shows how murderous and content they are about killing each other in the attempt to truncate their population. This story is just symbolism of the human race today. Each character represents groups in today's society which is insane to think about. The kids represent the people who just follow orders given to them.Mr.Summers and Mr.Graves represent the government or an overflow of power among a civilization. The Tess family represent those who are sacrificed on the basis of everyone else's lives.Everyone who chucks the stones willingly represents those who are willing to stop at nothing to pertain life and the status they're at.In total this story was very interesting and one of my all time
