¨The Scarlet Ibis¨ is a short story by James Hurst. This short story is about a young boy who has a brother named Doodle. Doodle is not like other kids his age, he has health problems. This story talks about the narrator and Doodle’s relationship throughout Doodle’s life. The author uses foreshadowing and symbolism to reveal Doodle’s sensitivity and uniqueness.
The use of foreshadowing shows how Doodle is sensitive because when the story foreshadowed his death there was always something sensitive about it. For example, In the story when the narrator said, “I remembered Doodle” it showed that Doodle was sensitive. This shows he was sensitive because the author made it sound like the narrator remembering Doodle was a bittersweet memory. This is because Doodle was very sensitive when it came to the love of his brother. In addition, the story had foreshadowed his death with a bird, it was described as “grace, for it layed down on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers.” This reveals that Doodle dies like the scarlet ibis. For example, when the author uses the way Doodle reacts to the scarlet ibis it uniquely expresses how they are both “graceful”. This shows that Doodle is unique in the way he looks. This is because he is fragile just like a bird, yet both are very graceful. In addition, the author also symbolizes Doodle’s death with the scarlet ibis when describing how in both instances “even death did not mar its grace.” This reveals that even in death both Doodle and the bird are still beautiful and graceful in death. The reason why is because Doodle was an exotic human being that was just full of grace when he died. Using foreshadowing and symbolism in this story is important because is the author did not use them, then the reader would not have known about how sensitive and unique Doodle

In "The Scarlet Ibis," James Hursts uses vivid imagery to foreshadow how the conflict will affect the end of the story. In the story, we have seen many visual clues that foreshadow the end of the story. In the beginning of the story, Doodle's brother narrates,". The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted across the cotton field and through every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead"(Hursts 1). Not only does this set up the atmosphere of the story, but it was already foreshadowing that Doodle was going to die.…

The coffin was an indication that Doodle was expected to die young which isolates him from everyone else. The family had kept Doodle's casket as they originally thought he would die at a younger age. One day Doodle's brother decided to show him his casket. When they reached the barn, Brother "took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket, telling how we all believe he would die" (Hurst 387). This shows that you shouldn’t let your pride and cruelty deprive you of your judgement because instead of just letting Doodle rest and get better, the narrator’s pride pushed him to continue on with his brother’s training. And this was the start of something that the narrator might regret for the rest of his life. This theme is also shown at the end of the story, after a lightning bolt destroyed a tree, when doodle tripped, a moment of cruelty took the narrator’s judgement. The narrator says, “The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us”(5).…

The first topic of discussion would be the difference in age of these two characters. They have an enormous age difference. Doodle, at the young age of five, has not experienced many things in his life because he is so young and inexperienced. Also because he cant move around efficiently throughout most of the story because he does not know how to walk until his brother shows him how to. An example would be from page 132: "When Doodle was five years old...".…
