Foreshadowing is heavily used by Poe to inform his audience of the events which the characters have yet to experience in his short story, “The Cask of Amontillado.” Because he is angry due to the insults he received from his acquaintance Fortunato, Montresor, the persona of this work of literature, formulates a plan to exact revenge upon him. During Carnival, Montresor invites Fortunato to visit his wine cellars to confirm whether a particular high-quality wine is really Amontillado, knowing he won’t be able to resist since he’s a wine connoisseur.
