Foreshadowing In Thanksgiving

This obligation to Stevie foreshadows many of Winnie’s future actions. One example of foreshadowing is when Winnie discovers that Stevie is dead. Because Winnie’s primary motivation for being with Verloc was Stevie, the reader can foreshadow that after Stevie’s death Winnie will leave and possibility kill Verloc because of her for Stevie and it being Verloc’s fault he is dead. After Stevie’s death, Winnie becomes distraught with rage. The only thing that was keeping her with Verloc was Stevie. Stevie was not only seen as a brother but also as something of a project for her to work on. Once she learns of Stevie’s death, Winnie becomes free for the first time allowing her to do whatever she wants. Additionally, because Verloc was the reason for …show more content…
Because Winnie has a strong commitment to Stevie. She is willing to sacrifice anything for him. This initially appears to be noble but turns out to become a fatal fault for Winnie. Winnie’s commitment to Stevie is very valiant because she throws away a potentially very happy life with the butcher’s boy and chooses a dismal existence with Verloc for Stevie’s sake. Because of this, commitment to Stevie, she is consistently tied down at home either doing things for Verloc to ensure he will continue to provide for Stevie or watching Stevie herself. In some form, she is almost always taking care of Stevie. This consumes all her time and prevents her from ever having a social life and making friends. Furthermore, because she is so committed to Stevie, she does not have the time to obtain a higher education or useful skills to further her own career. This means that she is stuck to other people who can provide for her like Verloc. This commitment to Stevie becomes especially problematic after Stevie dies. After Stevie’s death, Winnie’s lack of connections, education, or skills prevent her from ever being able to move on from her current situation in life and obtain a better one for herself.
