The tree is very significant in “A separate peace”. It symbolizes the risk, good, and evil. It physically represents danger and risk. Gene is physically hesitant to jump out of the tree, but does it for Finny. He risks falling to prove himself to Finny. We can tell there is an upcoming fall or disaster because of Gene’s uncertainty of the jumping. We get as feeling similar to the feeling we get in our gut, our bodies warning us.
