Foreshadowing In John Knowles A Separate Peace

Setting is a fantastic tool that every good writer uses. In the novel “A Separate piece” John Knowles uses setting to foreshadow the events that were to take place. By including the tree, Knowles introduces danger to the plot. By including extensive descriptions about the seasons, Knowles allows us to predict the change in energy and mood that takes place after finny breaks his leg. Knowles also uses the existence of the war in his foreshadowing. By allowing readers a guess at what is going to happen in the book, Knowles creates suspense and builds anticipation.

The tree is very significant in “A separate peace”. It symbolizes the risk, good, and evil. It physically represents danger and risk. Gene is physically hesitant to jump out of the tree, but does it for Finny. He risks falling to prove himself to Finny. We can tell there is an upcoming fall or disaster because of Gene’s uncertainty of the jumping. We get as feeling similar to the feeling we get in our gut, our bodies warning us. By incorporating the tree into the plot, Knowles physically foreshadows the disaster to come. Knowles also symbolically foreshadows the shift in tone with the tree. The tree represented the innocence and joy of Devon. As soon as Finny falls out of the tree, there is a rash mood-change that takes place. Before Finny fell, the boys no longer meet up for the Super suicide Society. The schoolings of Devon become more and more rigorous as the temperatures drop. The war going on is also affecting the students, as they now have to do things like clear the rail ways. We can see Knowles has chosen the climate element of setting to foreshadow the mood of the school.
