Foreshadowing In Great Expectations

Foreshadowing is the warning or indication of a future event in a book. Great Expectations is a classic American novel written by the famous Charles Dickens. Pip, the main character that we watch grow up, meets a convict and is forced to help him by getting him a file and food. This experience with his convict stays with him throughout his life, because it was such a strange and dangerous memory. He also meets an old lady named Miss Havisham who influences many of his decisions, because he believes that she is his benefactor. Pip has always wanted as much as he could get out of life, and would be willing to leave his family to get it. Dickens uses foreshadowing to push the story forward in many different situations. He foreshadows using Magwitch, Havisham, and expectations. As I said in prior, the convict is mentioned multiple times throughout the novel. Even after the incident at the beginning of the book, there are still references to the convict and the file. This is because it’s foreshadowing the fact that the convict, also known as Magwitch, Provis, etc., deeply cares about Pip. She used her beauty and status to break hearts, but this is because that’s who Miss Havisham made her be. Miss Havisham was vexed by the way men used women. She wanted to get back at them for what Compeyson did to her. She encourages Estella to break Pip’s heart. Even though it was a past event, it foreshadows it’s reveal, and directly causes the future of Miss Havisham and Estella. Estella ends up widowed and feels empty and alone, and Miss Havisham dies in a fire.
