Forerunner 225 Week 9 Research Paper

During my experience dealing with running and the many ways to track the statistics of each run, I came across the Garmin GPS watches and quickly utilized their abilities. Like any other producer, Garmin did not just make one model so I will compare their most popular watches, the Garmin Forerunner 225 and the Forerunner 10. The cost is the first thing people many runners look at. The Forerunner 10 is $129.99, while the cost of the Forerunner 225 is $299.99. Next, we will look at the size of the screen, because when you are running you want to see everything that is going on. The Forerunner 225 has a screen that is one inch by one inch where the Forerunner 10 only has a screen of 0.81” by 0.77”. This may seem like just a small difference, …show more content…
Both of these watches are GPS enabled and also have a high sensitivity receiver which transmits the signals for the GPS to work. When a runner begins their workout, they take many steps and could be listening to music and that creates many obstacles that interfere with their hearing. The 225 supplies a vibration alert that allows the runner to realize if there is something happening that calls for his/her attention, while the 10 does not have this feature. Many regular watches give the runner the date and have a built in alarm as well, which only the 225 has. As the runner continues tracking and recording their runs, naturally, they will become faster and will want to keep breaking their personal records. Each watch supplies the runner with these records, such as fastest mile, fastest 5K, longest run, and many more things. The 10 has what is called a Virtual Pacer, which is handy because it compares the runner’s current pace to the target pace they set for themselves. The 225 does not have this, but it has something the 10 does not have, an Accelerometer. This feature allows the runner to calculate the distance of their run indoors without an external hook

The screen would be made of ITO (indium tin oxide), the same material used to manufacture the touchscreens of Apple iPhones and a majority of touchscreen products [1]. While the material itself is relatively expensive, the resulting touchscreen is extremely responsive. If the device is to cater to the elderly population, the touchscreen itself would have to be responsive so that the patient in question would have an easy time operating the device, and ensuring that they receive treatment. The watch would include an adjustable plastic strap because plastic is a versatile and relatively cheap compared to other materials. Plastic also offers the option of color customization, which would make the product more aesthetically appealing.…

The SuperTracker surprised me specially on the physical activity tracker, since it provides options of many types of very specific physical activities, and allows you to compare each day of the week, as well as the difference in intensity, estimated calories burned, and duration of physical activity at work compared to grocery shopping and practicing vigorous sports, to name a few. At the research study that I work at, my job is to ask participants about their physical activity in a typical week while they are at work, doing sports, recreational activities, and to get to and from places, so this instrument helped have a better sense of the questions that I ask almost everyday and to connect these with my actual physical activity. Regarding my dietary intake and activity status compared to my targets, it really surprised me the high amount of sodium I consumed. I knew that my status for certain nutrients, minerals and vitamins was going to be low, but I never expected to see such a high amount of sodium present in my diet.…

Lead researcher Lisa Cadmus-Bertram compared the Fitbit Charge, Fitbit Surge, and two devices from another company, Mio, against the readings of an ECG. The Fitbit devices were only off by an average of about 5 beats per minute compared to the ECG readings while their users were in a resting state. During increased activity, however, the error of the Fitbit readings jumped to an average error of 20 to 40 beats per minute. The conclusion that these devices are significantly more accurate during rest than during physical activity has been supported by previous studies as…
