In the field of Forensics Science when dealing with the death of an individual there are three concepts that must be identified: cause, manner and mechanism of death. It is the job of the forensic investigators to help tell the story of the victims deaths by paying attention to detail and having a keen eye. According to James, Nordby and Bell, “drawing such conclusions depends on the information grained from investigations, descriptions of the death scene, case histories and autopsy reports” (Page 116). The cause of death pertains to the specific disease or injury that led to the death of the individual; for example, death could be due to a gun shot or leukemia. In contrast, the mechanism of death is the physiological or biochemical …show more content…
Due to all these various factors it is safe to assume that the death of this individual was not recent at all. It was not a robbery because a large amount of money was found in his pocket and his personal belongings were still in the car. The individual may have been sitting in the front passenger seat because thats where the personal belongings were found. Someone else may have been driving and crashed into a tree line, killing the passenger and dragged the dead body out of the car. She had just ended a relationship with a controlling boyfriend and lived alone. There was no indication of trauma, foul play or forced entry. However, in the tub near the drain there was a television which was also submerged in the water. The television was plugged into a nearby socket and did not have a ground fault circuit breaker. Most likely, the woman was trying to take a bath and position her television in such a way that she would be able to watch while in the bathtub. However, while she was in the water she accidentally may have dropped the television in the water and electrocuted herself to death. In this case, the cause of death was the television being dropped in the water. The manner of her death was accidental. Whereas, the mechanism of her death is whatever physiological or biochemical effect that electrocution had on her body. Electrocution can cause a current to run through the heart - ventricular fibrillation - causing death. Death can also occur as a result of the electricity passing through the brain. Therefore, any one of these options may have been the mechanism of her
