Forensic Psychology Personal Statement

I am currently dual enrolled at Daytona State College and would like to double major in criminology and psychology. I hope to become a forensic psychologist. Forensic psychology, as defined by the American Psychological Association (APA), is the application of clinical specialties to the legal arena. Thus, the practice of forensic psychology, and perhaps the most frequent duty of forensic psychologists, is the psychological assessment of individuals who are involved, in one way or another, with the legal system. I’ve been interested in psychology ever since I took AP psych in high school. It was my favorite class and it felt like I was learning something that I actually cared about. I find learning about human behavior extremely thought provoking. I’m fascinated with forensics because my childhood was filled with shows like NCSI and Criminal Minds. While those shows illustrate false perceptions of the field they still provoked my interest. The two fields being merged together is best for me because I would like to assess the mental health of individuals who have been involved with crimes. During my time at DSC I will obtain my Behavioral and Social Sciences AA Degree, which will get me one step closer to my dream job. There are so many different subfields that do several diverse jobs. I understand that becoming a forensic psychologist requires rigorous work and an abundant amount of time, but I think that it’s all worth it. I would have a brilliant career that I’m actually interested in. Since I’m planning on double majoring I will have many varying career options if I am ever uninterested in my current occupation. I’m now even more interested in the field now that I have done all of this research and read about actual people in the field and what they do. Forensic psychology seems like a career that I would enjoy
