Hong Kong, the city that never sleeps, shadowing a thriving economy and rigid workforce system. As the years have gone by Hong Kong has created several job opportunities, from sweeping the streets, to being an investment banker. It is undisputed that people pursue job opportunities everywhere, these people, even include, parents. Parents have responsibilities when it comes to family, providing for them is one. This can be due to many reasons, one of them being the fact that, only 1 parent works within the family, enabling the other to attend to housework and look after children, also a reason for why a foreign domestic helper is hired, if parents are too wrapped up/struggling to balance their careers, housework/daily errands and family suitably. Another reason being, the funds required to have a foreign domestic helper, with the monthly minimum wage already being at, $4010, leaving a yearly wage of, $48120. One scenario would be that, if these economies were to expand, grow and develop in the future, developing countries may not see fit to be sending labour overseas to Hong Kong, resulting in a lower amount of foreign domestic helpers coming moving into Hong Kong, as the countries already developed and can use their supply of labour to work on local projects or have local jobs to further develop the country’s economy. Currently, many domestic helpers migrate overseas because they are in need of higher wages or even a job to support their families compared to a job in their hometown. This would show a higher demand for foreign domestic helpers than there is supply of them. Issues with Hong Kong families may arise as some families who are in need to hire a foreign domestic helper may not have the opportunity to do so because there aren’t enough foreign domestic helpers moving into Hong Kong to match the demand for them.
