Ford School Master's Students Purchasing Behavior

Our survey sought to answer a number of questions revolving around Ford School master’s students textbook purchasing behavior, with the intent to provide information useful to faculty when selecting text(s) for their courses. We were interested in how students gain access to books/texts for their class and what factors influence their likelihood to do so. Specifically, we wanted to know:
What proportion of classes ask students to buy textbooks? - No specific hypothesis, but wanted a baseline of the proportion of classes asking students to acquire texts to put other results into context.
Are students in different programs more or less likely to purchases texts? - We expect dual degree students to purchase texts most often, followed by MPPs, with MPAs the least likely.
How likely are students to acquire the required texts? - One of our core questions. We don’t have a specific hypothesis but assume it is not close to 100%.
Do different class types affect the likelihood of acquiring text(s) for a class?
Quantitative vs qualitative - We expect quantitative classes to induce students to purchase texts more often as texts are used for problems.
Ford vs Non-Ford - No specific

If the nonresponse rate is higher, I would be concerned with potential bias. For example, perhaps students who respond to surveys are more likely to purchase texts for class or differ in some other way from nonresponders. In this high nonresponse case, I would compare the demographics of our survey respondents to Ford School master's students as a whole (though my current survey does not have demographic information, I would add this). If our survey respondents look similar to master's students as a whole, I would not expect bias. If I see a difference between respondents and Ford master's students I would need to be careful about drawing conclusions from our sample to the entire population of Ford master’s

The four research terms that are new to my understanding are response bias, descriptive analysis, quasi-experiment, and true experiment. • Response bias is the effect of nonresponse on a survey. How would results change if those who had not response would have responded. • Descriptive analysis is an analysis of all data for independent and dependent variables in the study. • Quasi-experiment has to do with participants.…

The cost of college is rising, everybody knows that. The cost is expected to rise with inflation and the inclusion of new technology, yet what people were not expecting were the cost to soar as high as they have. In the U.S. News article "Hiring Spree Fattens College Bureaucracy—And Tuition" by Belkin and Thurm, they mention that in 1975 the average student could work 24 hours a week to pay for college; in today's world, it works out to be closer to 32 hours a week. This is not news to my peers, we hear it all the time from our parents or grandparents; where they tell us stories of how they worked one summer job and went on road trips every month and still had enough money for college with out taking out large student loans.…

It is rare for students to use a textbook in multiple classes from different professors. When students are done with their textbook, they have two possibilities: they can keep their textbook, or they can sell it. If they keep their textbooks, the textbooks will probably sit on the shelf collecting dust, but if they sell their textbooks, even with annotations, they will receive a large portion of the cost back. The United States Congress’ Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance proposed a solution to high textbook prices. “The committee’s report … mainly proposes strengthening the market for used textbooks – by encouraging college bookstores to guarantee that they will buy back textbooks, establishing online book swaps among students, and urging the faculty to avoid switching textbooks from one semester to the next,” which shows how even the government approves of buying back textbooks (Granof 206).…

However the differences with the other company’s vs Ford are that they seem to be more diversified than Ford. Ford has truly focused on aligning all of the structures to all function the same no matter what location with very little diversification to include a right sizing effort to reduce the platforms and slim down. The other companies have not focused on this type of right sizing and because of this I truly believe that Ford is most likely to be more successful in the long term. They are staying the course and making sure that they can function on their own with no assistance and taking small steps to…

When defining consumer behavior, it’s the set of value seeking activities that take place as people go about addressing their real needs (Babin, B. J., & Harris, E. G.). Men and women purchasing behavior comes from their differences in their up bring and socialization. Depending on the consumer’s behavior and the various situations that they are in, usually shows it. This is all related to the consumer buying behavior which evaluates their Need recognition, their evaluation of alternatives, and their post purchase reaction. This leads me to discuss the difference between women and men difference that determines their purchasing and buying behavior.…

Understanding Buyer Behavior: Understanding your customers’ buying behavior is one of the elements that helps to be successful (Oakes). Knowing the difference between consumer and business buyer behavior is also very important because a business buyer is making purchases based on technical specification, and the consumer is often making purchases based on brand reputation or personal recommendations,…
