John Glass of Columbus, Ohio happened on an ad for a turbocharged 1963 Corvair Monza 900 Spyder on Craigslist for $1,300. That was the year that Chevy introduced the turbocharged engine. It was also the year they test ran the Spyder before it went into production in ’64. Because the Spyder was an option and not a model, the car’s rarity would be hard to prove.
As it happened, this Corvair had only one owner, a driver who had kept meticulous records, including the order sheet he had filled out with the Spyder package on it. What a find!

He bought his first one while still a student, striking a deal with the salesman at George Black Motors in Burnaby, BC. A few years later, by then married, Harry traded up for the newest and hottest Cougar – a Competition Orange 1969 Eliminator equipped with all the extras.
By 1974, Harry and his wife Marlene had settled down south of Vancouver. The Eliminator didn’t fit with their new family life and was sold to a local teenager. Within a month, the new owner had wrecked the car and it was written off, leaving Harry filled with regret.
It was once he’d retired that Harry decided to look for a new project. While browsing the Internet, he came across an Eliminator that looked a lot like his original car. The ad was 18 months old, but he emailed the seller anyway. The car was still available. Also, it had once been totalled and then repaired.
Harry bought his original car back on Aug. 9, 2009, almost exactly 40 years after he had purchased it new. He has since received proof that it is in fact the same car and has taken great pains to bring it back to its former glory. He says it “makes an old guy feel young
