Forced Reactions: An Intellectual Analysis

Decent Essays
I used to be a traditional artist, working in paint, sculpture, drawing. Then I realized my work wasn't seen in the way I had envisioned for it, so I then made the transition into photography. Because I felt I could create work that would allow the viewer the ability to envision themselves in the piece. Almost as if they were a part of the narrative. I'm creating work with symbolism, depth, and narrative in an effort to make my photography as artistically strong as a fine art painting. Recently I started working on a series called: "Forced Reactions," which explores and quite literally creates scenes/narratives about depression, addiction, and suicide. In an effort to change or at least influence others minds to confront the fact that metal

Significant personal events in one’s life can act to influence an individual’s artmaking practice. This is evident through Frida Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ 1944, Jenny Sages ‘After Jack’ 2012 and Christian Thompson ‘King Billy’ 2010. Frida Kahlo, is the first example of such an individual as she experienced a horrible accident causing permanent damage to her spine. As a result of the accident, Kahlo became influenced to paint through using her emotion as a driving force to paint where Kahlo states “I am broken, but I am happy as long as I can paint”. This is depicted in Kahlo’s artwork ‘The Broken Column’ in plate 4 which depicts a figure namely Kahlo herself being pricked by nails with the presence of a broken pillar.…

The title of my artwork is In Tough Times, Hope. Here is a description of my artwork: in the bottom right hand corner, there is the color black, beginning at its darkest and becoming lighter and lighter until it reaches a white. There are many shades of gray throughout the value scale. On the upper right, there is two abstract shapes that are white, red and gray. Pouring from these irregular shapes are blue dots with a touch of orange in them.…

Today, everything is a product. From media to marketing and everything in between, the aim of design is to ensure a profit from an established relationship between product and audience. The goal is for the audience to buy whatever you are selling, whether it be physical products or intangible concepts, and the design must make your product entertaining without being so outlandish that the audience feels out of their depth, thus rejecting it entirely. As a result, originality is a scarce commodity. What could once be perceived as inspiration has led to more drastic measures of competitive plagiarism, sparking new laws of copyright and ownership.…

For the Senior Capstone Exhibition, I presented a series of five photographs. Each of the photos were printed 16” x 20” portraits accompanied by text underneath them. The portraits are of a five individuals portraying an emotionless expression. The emotions will live in the stories, not in the facial expressions of the models. An emotion was assigned to each photo through these stories.…

    Sky High Aesthetic

My aesthetic is eclectic and less than focused, and I feel it’s easiest for me to verbalize the range of opinions I have about art through movie examples. My favorite movie is a 2005 Disney live-action film about teens going to a high school for superheroes called Sky High. There is very little that is “challenging to the viewer” about Sky High; it’s essentially a John Hughes movie with superheroes, right down to the soundtrack which is built entirely of covers of 80s new-wave hits. There is nothing remotely subtle about this movie, but it’s my favorite movie. Every actor on the screen (a cast comprised mostly of actual teenagers, but also bigger names like Kurt Russell, Jim Rash, and Dave Foley) seems completely invested in their performance.…

How mental illness can influence art and creativity. I love this topic because it is something I can get deep with and relate to in my personal life. Both me and my brother suffer from depression and we are both artists; I’m a visual artist and he is a piano player and singer, so this topic hit close to home for me instantly. I thoroughly enjoyed the outline creating process as it helped bring all my thoughts together for my topic. There is a romanticized stigmatism going around that if you are…

Finding one’s true passions can be an epiphany, yet for me it was an oddity I strayed away from at first. As a child, I finger painted to my heart’s content and displayed my artistic expressions on the cream-colored walls of my house. I loved art throughout elementary and middle school, although I never felt that I was very good at it. Even still, it captivated me.…

Yearwork one The influence of Zanele Muholi’s techniques, concepts and subject matter in her “La Rochelle” series and “Miss D'vine” series on my work: “Flowers in (my) hair” Conceptualization: Like in Muholi’s La Rochelle series (figs.2, 3, 4), my artwork Flowers in (my) hair (fig.1) tackles gender norms- mainly toxic masculinity . Inadvertently I stumbled upon something that I would take for granted as a refuge. A refuge in which I could express myself, my emotions and transfer them into a visual reality. For once I did not acknowledge the presence of the crutches beside me. Hesitant at first then gradually getting more bold with each sweep of the hand, my depressed state faded away as color expanded across the canvas and replaced itself with one of hunger and awe. This was the day art pulled me by the arm me and forced me to expand its importance in my life.…

During the reading this week I was able to really connect with some thing that the book Art and Fear said in chapters four and five. What I found interesting this week reading thou is that I finally was also able to connect with showing he Rilke said in his letter number six. We’ve been reading both of these books for some time now and it just surprises me that it took this long for me to find something I connect with in Rilke letters. Back to the book Art and Fear, I found my self really liking something’s that they said about the fear of others in the artist.…

The paradoxical role of photography in contemporary life is explored by Teju Cole in his essay “Memories of Things Unseen.” When a photograph is the last trace we have of a destroyed work of art, it becomes something more, or so it seems. Photography in its purest form is simply a method of storytelling without the need for words. Many factors go into taking a photo. You don't simply take a photo using just your eyes, but rather with your emotions, experience, and heart.…

There is only so much a news article can say, but a photograph can bring emotion to you that changes your outlook on that situation. For example, a very famous photo by Richard Drew called ‘The Falling Man’, a photograph of the 9/11 attack witnessing the moment a workman from the towers plummeted to the ground after jumping. Even though this event was worldwide renowned, many people were unaware of the actual emotion associated with the event, the terror and the destruction that happened on that date. The different and most impacting part of this image is that from this event the most widely known photographs were of the planes or the towers, whereas Drews photograph was of the people, which creates a whole new level of compassion and emotion…

Every person in this world has an individual creativity built within them. My individual creativity personally took me a while to uncover, I only recently unearthed my true creativity during my junior year. I express my creativity through makeup, poetry, painting, drawing and redecorating my surroundings such as my room which I like to think of as my sanctuary because it’s the only place I can disconnect myself from everything, focus on myself and reflect on my days. Makeup is my main outlet of expression since that’s the one that’s in the spotlight and is a quote on quote paraded for the public eye to see when used correctly and minimally to enhance ones beauty it makes a person look more presentable and put together. I was inspired to write…

Photographs are used to convey messages without having to say a single word. That is how strong a single photograph can be. Photography is a beautiful skill that can document events, natural scenery, and can be used for artistic projects. First, one of the many reasons about the importance of photography is the fact that it slows down the rapid pace of life. Every day there is something worth remembering whether it be an event that occurred or a first time meeting a valuable friend.…
