Gale, who is usually cheerful and friendly, had fallen ill when she met Martha, who left the encounter believing Gale to be cold and unfriendly. From what we learned about social cognition, we know how important these first impressions are in every type of relationship. Using the research cited by the textbook, we can predict the future relationship between these two people may have been affected by their terrible first impression of one another.
