There was a point in time where the book The Wizard of Oz was banned for depicting a woman that had a strong leadership role. The Diary of Anne Frank was banned for being too depressing. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is another novel that has been banned as well. The book was proclaimed as, “Indecent and inappropriate for young readers(Goffe.) ” What is it that leads a book toward getting banned?…
Overview The Boys in the Boat is a historical account of the 1936 United States Olympic rowing team’s journey to the Olympics. The book reflects on all aspects of history in the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s, including the depression, family customs, World War II, and the lives of average citizens in Washington state. While heart-breaking at some points, the overall tone of this incredible story is uplifting. You will not want to put The Boys in the Boat down.…
It is often assumed that every occupant of Nazi Germany either hated the Jews or knowingly ignored their hardships; however, that is not entirely true. There were some Germans who attempted to make a difference. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a historical fiction novel about the life of a young German girl. Liesel is a young orphan growing up in a poor town in Nazi Germany. Although as far-fetched as it sounds, stealing books is what keeps her alive in the end.…

ANTI SEMITISM The content above is anti Jewish propaganda. The picture has a Jewish man leisurely sitting on many skeletons while smoking a cigar in what may be either "hell" or a battlefield. Regardless the Jewish man is depicted as an evil person who knows no fear and will do anything he wants. Supposedly an enemy of Christ since they have their own religion and the Nazi party did not like people who had different ideologies or opposed them.…
His propaganda campaigns created a violent atmosphere towards the Jews. Films for example, were used to discriminate Jews, and show the greatness of Hitler. These films helped push Nazi ideology and further increase hatred towards the Jews. Newspapers also depicted cartoons of Jews being seen as the enemy of Germany. Hitler would censor the media, which meant the German people would only see what the Nazi’s want them to, and anything against Nazi Ideology was ban.…
Freedom of expression is a uniquely American tradition, at least to the extent we have here. Amy Witherbee, a researcher who studies how democracy and censorship go hand and hand said “At the core of censorship is always a parallel belief in the ability of an idea to alter lives and change nations. The challenge is to let those ideas wreak their havoc, and trust in our capacity as the citizens of a democracy to make of the damage something better than what was there before. If, on the other hand, we close down the arguments, retract the controversies, and avoid the challenges, then what we have is not a real democracy, but a nation afraid to lead itself” (Witherbee Par. 12). The First amendment is in place to protect citizens from censorship.…
Censorship has followed the free expressions of men and women throughout history. The very first record of censorship was in China, 300 AD, when the first censorship law was introduced (Otite). Books should be free for anyone and everyone to read, although children and young adults may be naive and impressionable, books should not be exclusive to certain age groups or social classes. The challenging and banning of the books like Huckleberry Finn, Fahrenheit 451, and The Great Gatsby.…
In a few areas a great book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and many books like it are being banned. To Kill a Mockingbird is a very informative book on what life was like in the 1930’s, but it is still being banned for strong language, “strong content”, and strong cases of racism. Many schools have had kids read that book, but because of recent events a few have started to ban it. Some people believe that they can teach messages like the ones taught from this book, but in a better way, so they make it more suitable for kids to read. Some citizens feel that kids should be introduced to strong topics like this when they are in around 8th grade, which is a very common time for schools to have children/teens to read this novel in school, because kids need to be prepared for the real world early on.…
The Holocaust 'officially' began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler became chancellor (prime minister) of Germany and the Nazi party took over the country. There were more than forty-thousand concentration camps throughout Europe between 1933 and 1945 when World War II ended. Hitler wrote in his book Mein Kampf (1926), "Propaganda tries to force a doctrine on the whole people... Propaganda works on the general public from the standpoint of an idea and makes them ripe for the victory of this idea," expressing that Hitler and the Nazis' were able to take the Holocaust to such a dramatic point was because of the use of propaganda not only in Germany, but also throughout Europe. Hitler and the Nazis used media such as film, posters, books, music etc.…
The Red Badge of Courage is one of the greatest American novels written by Stephen Crane. Unfortunately, this book was banned due to its excessive violence and the enmity that the author has towards soldiers. “The Red Badge of Courage in 1895. Regardless, the book is considered one of the most accurate portrayals of the physical and psychological effects of intense battle.” (Shmoop)…
Book banning and censoring is something that happens in this country to stop children from being exposed to topics that are sometimes deemed too explicit to be suitable for children. Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, keeps getting banned from the curriculum of a Mississippi middle school. This is happening for the books inclusion of rape and derogatory language, particularly the overuse of the n-word. Many also do not like how some of the characters in the novel are portrayed, and do not realize how this portrayal is very accurate to the time period. Because of the truthfulness of the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, along with every other book, should not be banned or censored because books reflect and bring awareness to real life problems, the practice of banning books violates the First Amendment, and reasons for book banning are often easily contradicted.…
Book Banning is the attempt to remove material. Books are removed for their explicit content. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor was banned for racism and explicit language. To challenge a book means to try to remove a book (Crum, 1). Over 11,300 books have been challenged.…
IfThe Call of the Wild is a story about ultimately achieving mastery over a foreign, primal world, that mastery is achieved only through separation from the group and independent survival. Throughout much of the story, Buck is serving a master or a pack; even as a leader he is carrying out someone else’s commands and is responsible for the well-being of the group. In many ways, then, when John Thornton cuts Buck free from his harness, he is also beginning the process of Buck’s separation from a pack mentality. Although Buck continues to serve Thornton, his yearnings for a solitary life in the wild eventually overcome…
