Ernest Hemingway Although Ernest Hemingway might be an older author, he has written some classic novels, such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. This American short story writer and novelist was around years ago. Born in 1899, Ernest was raised by his parents, Clarence and Grace Hemingway. Growing up, Ernest and his parents loved to spend time away from their home in Chicago, Illinois. The family owned a cabin in the northern part of Michigan where they spent their time hunting and fishing (Shmoop.com). When the fun had come to an end, Hemingway reported on the Spanish Civil War of 1937 where he would soon meet a fellow war correspondent, Martha Gellhorn, which would anticipate the divorce of his current wife and the marriage of Ernest and Martha in the near future. This adventure supplied Ernest with the tools he needed to write his Pulitzer Prize nominee, For Whom the Bell Tolls. On November 12, 1931, Martha gave birth to Ernest’s third and final child, Gregory. Their new child brought lots of joy to the couple as they spent the next two years traveling around the world. Their first trip took place in Spain, as Ernest was researching bullfights for one of his next novels, Death is the Afternoon (Shmoop.com). The next trip was a ten week safari in Kenya for Pauline and Ernest (Shmoop.com). During this vacation, Ernest enjoyed being in Africa so much that he released many different books surrounding the topic. In 1935, he released the novel Green Hills of Africa. On top of this release, he published more short stories, The Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. Two years later, he releases To Have and Have Not. The couple bought a farm in Cuba to serve as their winter residence (Shmoop.com).The following year, The United States joins World War ll. Hemingway decided to volunteer as a Navy correspondent. He was lucky enough to be present for many important dates, such as D-Day. He was later awarded for his service with a Bronze Star in 1947. Toward the end of his service in World War ll, Ernest met yet another war correspondent by the name of Mary Welsh. On December 21, 1945, Hemingway ends up divorcing his current wife, Martha Gellhorn, due to career hostility. Although he was doing what he loved, reporting in Europe as a war correspondent for Collier’s magazine, the fact that both Martha and Ernest had the same job caused much stress in the relationship, which led to Ernest Hemingway’s third divorce. Not but three months later did he end up marrying his fourth and final wife, Mary Welsh, whom he met during his services in World War ll. The couple was married on March 14, 1946. The next few years will bear much despair for Ernest Hemingway. Although the couple hoped to have children together, they, sadly, did not end up being able to bear any (Biography.com).
