The overall theme in the book For Whites Folks Who Teach in the Hood and the Rest of Y 'all too, by Christopher Edmin, the major theme is to establish a rapport with the students that you are real person who cares about them, and the you as professional respect their background.
Throughout the book Edmin is pointing out the ways how information has been delivered in the past is not working, and there are obvious differences between races. He brings light to how many things are not recognized by people from different cultures because they have a different outlook on things, he uses the comparison to the indigenous people to make his point. Emdin speaks about fear and decided to dedicate a whole chapter to it, showing that it is one of the major issues dealt with by teachers who are out of their comfort zone. I think that is one of the biggest issue with teachers, especially those who are teaching in urban schools, but identifies with a different race and why they have a problem establishing rapport with students. When fear drives people decisions, they are not able to get past their biases and often times students are judged based on how they look, or something they say or do. This concept can be used across multiple areas in education, because you never know what a student or person is dealing with. I personally have experienced this throughout my career both as a professional and as the adult, and I think that a lot of the misunderstanding that he mentioned and dealt with in the book would have had a different outcome. All of these situations were based on assumptions and conclusions that were jumped to, without listening to why things were done or decision were made. This is where I will address what Emdin calls Reality Pedagogy. Reality pedagogy is an approach to teaching and learning that has a primary goal of meeting each student on his or her own cultural and emotional turf. (Emdin, 2016) This is an ideal way to bring each students reality into the classroom and ultimately into education as a way to of understanding and connecting with them while embracing their conceptual understanding of things. If teachers are intentional about addressing this area, then the way of dealing with behaviors will change, and ultimately leave more room for true teaching. I like that he addresses the problem in schools about students being required to change who they are
