In the beginning of the film, we see religious leaders speaking on how homosexuality is an abomination. We see an older white man say that, “[he] knows of only one book that could be read and reread and continue to be a challenge: the Bible.” While he might not have meant it to be taken this way, from that statement we can understand that this Bible is a complex book that even when taken literally can contradict itself and not make complete sense. We are creatures of habit and patterns, so we are always searching for something that does not belong. When we find an outlier, we want to convert is back to the “normal” and to what we know. This is the reputation that LGBT people have gained in the biblical literalist community. There has come to be about a truth that this is real because God says that it is in the Bible. People that are informed about this and are right in God’s eye are the dominant group against people who are LGBT or believe that this is okay.
The short cartoon in the middle of the film addresses many misconceptions that Christians may have regarding LGBT Americans. Looking from a scientific perspective, genes do play a role in determining sexuality based off popular studies. When we have information and truths that involve real “science”, it is harder to argue. Scientific evidence is made from experiments and analysis, not just one ancient book. If God did really make people this way, should we not treat them with respect? Hopefully a silly cartoon like this one could open some eyes about common prejudices and come-backs.
