The Great Gatsby shows the opposite American experience by showing the rich and privileged. Though they both have confliction the upper class still looks down upon people in poverty. Wealth in this book gives the characters sense of self worthiness that they probably do not deserve and make them have extreme superficial views of other classes and races. Tom for instance is a racist. He thinks that white people are in command of the world and that they have to keep watch over the other races. He says It 's up to us (white people) who are the dominate race to watch out or these other races will have control of things”(Fitzgerald 19). Tom is a representation of the type of people that were living in that era. Since The Great Gatsby is based in the pre WW2 era, there was a lot of discrimination and segregation and many people held the same ideals has him. In one part of the book Nick the main protagonist was talking about a backwards world where whites people were driving colored people (Fitzgerald 34). European countries have had a rise of xenophobia views and ideals that have lead to many cases of discrimination and hatred. For instance in German there has been a recent surge in neo Nazi politics. These are people who idolize Hitler 's ideals and are trying to create a full aryan race. Their distainment toward both Jewish and Islamic religions are causing massive turmoil in Europe. Human rights groups have already reported that 190 people have been killed by neo nazis (Haltiwanger) Among with Germany, France has had its fair share of controversy when it comes to racism and bigotry. They have been known for the islamophobic views. France has publicly banned hijabs from public schools and there have been many reported attacks on mosques and other holy praying ground out of fear for terrorist. This isn 't the only report about islamophobia in the world. Because of the wars that are happening in the Middle East, many people are seeking refugee or asylum in European countries. Because of this there has been resistance from both the government and the people. They are claiming that the people that are fleeing their war torn countries are terrorist and are judging the actions of a few people toward the entire group.
