Footloose: The Original Movie The ratings assigned to movies can be touch and go. What was once accepted for a movie to be rated PG-13 or R was clearly defined. Today, movies and television programs have blurred the lines of what people may find offensive, and what they would like to watch with their children. These hazy lines can make it difficult enjoy the content, lighting, camera angles, and soundtracks of movies. Footloose, the original version, is an old fashioned coming of age movie that the entire family can enjoy, and it has a storyline with characters that are relatable, and are easily followed by audiences of many genres. The soundtrack is fused with pop, disco, funk style music, and the song tells the story of each character, as they learn something new about themselves. The electrically charged sounds of keyboards synthesizers, and electric guitars, add depth and emotion to Footloose. From ballads like “Almost Paradise” highlighting the importance of young love, pop tunes like “Let’s Hear it for the Boy”, and Rock Anthems like “Holding out for a Hero”, every person can easily find a song that relates to their own life and experiences, as they navigate the murky waters of the teenage years, love, and relationship building. Until Ren came to town, everyone allowed their silence to agree with him. With his love of dance and music, Ren would not stop until he helped the teens and adults understand the value of music. In the final scene, the town held a dance, except no one was dancing. Not willing to let a great opportunity to educate and unite the town, as well as breathe life back into a town that was dead, Ren used his eclectic creativity to liven the party. As the title track “Footloose” played, the excitement soon rippled through the old barn setting, and adults and teens were dancing, laughing, and having a great time. This scene was important as everyone was free to be themselves, and Ariel was finally free from her abusive relationship, and the unspoken judgement of her father. This a sentiment echoed in the 2011 reboot of the film.
