Footloose: Play Analysis

Improved Essays
The play Footloose could have many interpretations of the overall message depending on the values of each audience member. I believe that the overall message of the play is finding freedom from the things that entrap you. We see evidence of this throughout the major plot line, and in each character’s personal fight for freedom. The title of the play, the dialogue, and the songs also support this message of freedom. The title of “Footloose” gives the audience the first clues they need to realize this message. It relates to the action in the play of letting loose and having fun, as the kids in the town eventually get to do at the dance. Even the definition of the word footloose which is “free to go or travel about; not confined by responsibilities” …show more content…
For Ren not only is he stuck under this law of the town but he has the weight of his father’s absence holding him back. Ariel is also trapped by her father, but it is his high expectations of her and the shadow of her bother’s death that stop her from her freedom. Reverend Shaw was unable to let go of his son after the accident and this is what traps him from finding freedom in the form of peace. Willard, Rusty, Ethel, and Vi also have something that is holding them back from finding their freedom, such as Willard’s fear of not being able to dance. Aside from the characters fight for freedom, the main plot centers around the law against dancing that hinders the ability of the townspeople, especially the kids, from finding freedom. The plot comes across best when Willard says, “Ren, you’re not free- you’re crazy! You know there’s a law!” near the end of the first act. This is right before the kids decide to take the ability to hold a dance into their own hands and fight the law, as up until this point, we have seen them unhappily living under the law that binds them. Ren has two lines near one another in the script where we see him address the law impeding them and his decision to fight for their freedom, “how long do you have to live in that shadow? There

The Annie Russell Theatre’s presentation of Foreigner was an enjoyable and captivating experience, in which I commend. The play exhibits the story of an English visitor to a small town in Georgia and the ways in which he becomes integrated into their culture, while pretending to be a foreigner who cannot speak english. Conflict occurs when Charlie, the “foreigner,” upsets the cultural uniformity in the town as anti-immigrant tensions rise. The story contains the main themes of cultural integration, identity crisis, and personal growth. Thus, themes of the production outline the specific ways in which the story conveys its message.…

The title of the play Lost in Yonkers is written by Neil Simon. The theme that relates to the Monologue spoken by Bella is a person's need for love. A monologue is a long speech by one actor. The monologue Bella speaks of is when she is talking to grandma about how she is strong and can take care of herself and a family. Bella is connected to the theme because her whole life she never experienced love from grandma and her family until she tried to experience it herself, in the monologue she tells Grandma about how she would be a better mother than her and that all she wants is her Momma’s approval.…

This represents how Hamlet’s perception of women has been marred by his opinion on his mother’s actions following King Hamlet’s death. Given this state of mind, he essentially sees women as deceitful, diminishing their status within his mind. This corresponds with the song as Cliff Savage recollects a woman asking him for a ride to a function and the first thought which crossed his mind concerned intercourse, as seen by the chorus of the song. While the song in particular references the artist’s yearning to have fun through the aforementioned action, the mentality expressed in the song mirrors that of Hamlet. Overall, it paints a demeaning picture of women in which their status is diminished in regards to men.…

Gone Home is a narrative exploration game by the company Fullbright that stars Kaitlin Greenbriar returning to her family home after being overseas. Gone Home is often questioned on the complexity of its game play, and is often thought to be more of an interactive story, however it does fulfill the requirements of a game and I will be discussing various game play mechanics in Gone Home such as the different objects and their attributes, rules for game play and the overall design that help to support the narrative, as well as how all of this is used to create an effective story and why this is the best medium for such a story. I will start by giving the briefest of summaries; the game opens with Kaitlin, who we control in a first person perspective, returning home to a locked house all set in the 90s Their is a note left…

This is similar to when we find out that Mayella was abused by her father but still loves him because well, it’s her father. They both show unhealthy relationships and how bad things can be at home. The mood in both of this song and the book is desperate. They are both desperate for love and will do anything to stay by their family/man.…

The musical Into the Woods, by Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and James Lapine (book) is a compilation of fairytales with a unique twist of life’s hard lessons after getting what you “wished” for. The play’s main story line is composed of well-known fairytales such as: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Jack and the bean stock. These fairytales are all intertwined in order to help the protagonist (the baker) collect all the ingredients the witch has asked for in order for him and his wife to have a baby. The play is a metaphor for the different paths a person may take when opportunities unfold.…

The Tale of a Modern Fairy Tale In Emma Donoghue’s The Tale of the Shoe, the classic Cinderella tale gets put under the microscope; the author tests the way the reader views the classic fairy tale. Donoghue challenges and dismantles perhaps overused fairy tale archetypes by using vivid imagery, figurative language, and specific word choices throughout the work. By retelling the Cinderella story in this manner, Donoghue is able to force the reader to be critical of fairy tales and create a fresh story for new audiences. The strategic imagery that Emma Donoghue uses throughout The Tale of the Shoe creates layers on top of previous images used in the piece.…

The city of Vienna in the play Measure for Measure written by Shakespeare is a fictional city ruled by the Duke, who has very few restraints and shows alot of mercy to his people. Compared to Angelo how shows little to know mercy when he was left in charge of the city. The Duke and Angelo show two very different characters who differ in their own look. Isabella is also effected by both mercy and liberty because of who she is and the choices she is given to save her brother. The Duke can be described as a king and friendly person who lets the people be free to do what they want to, while Angelo can be described as a cruel and strict person who makes the people feel restricted.…
