Is Football and Basketball Beneficial to Students? When it comes to sports everyone knows the precautions to that sport even if for adults; whether their kids play or not. So why is it a bad thing? Why is it a good thing? Two main sports that most people talk about are basketball and football. They can be dangerous but also beneficial. Basketball and football are good for students so they learn skills, they work together, and they gain social skills; however when parents watch their kids play or watch other students they tend to have a negative attitude towards other teams, which can be harmful to the students and kids around them. Students who play football or basketball have the advantages of being able to work well with others. They can …show more content…
Adults usually set an example for the students but when it comes to playing on the field it’s a whole different ball game. “Indeed, it is no secret that too often scorekeeping, league standing, and the drive to win bring out the worst in adults who are more absorbed in living out their own fantasies than in enhancing the quality of the experiences for children.” (Statsky, 155, paragraph 8). Parents also don’t realize that children reflect on what their parents say when they’re in the stands. Some students quit the sport they love because it’s no longer fun when they play since their parents had started making it more aggressive. “Children are easily influenced, and when they sense that their competence and worth are based on their ability to live up to their parents and coaches high expectations.” (Statsky, 154, Paragraph 6). Also they may quit because they don’t get to play. Parents and even coaches make it hard for the students to even want to play the sport that they love to play. However some adults can make the players also play aggressively or even would encourage students to have negative attitude towards other teams they play against. Most people would agree adults do so but to kids this is also …show more content…
It is beneficial to students but parents need to change the way their attitudes about the game and the other teams. The students gain skills by being a leader, a follower. They also tend to gain social skills and become very open-minded to what other have to say and keep in mind that they have to consider ideas to the team. Players become very well with doing work together. Students will also be able to gain more health benefits to help them develop more of their bodies. But since the adults have negative attitude about other teams it reflects on how well the players will play and how hard the players are willing to work into succeeding their goals. Since it also reflect to the way the players and students see things and the way others will as well. Students will think that will be okay to do since the adults will be saying things to reflect and question them about how they view other teams and the other schools. In the essay “Children Need to Play, not Compete”, Jessica Statsky writes about the importance of children being able to have fun playing a sport without the pressure of winning or losing (152-157). Playing sports can be a huge part of a child’s life, but parents and coaches need to remember that sports are here to keep a child busy and active. Children use sports to make friends not compete with each other to see who is better. When sport oriented parents and over controlling coaches try to have kids play at a professional level this causes children to lose interest (152, par. 1). With this being said the parents and coaches need to realize how they are taking the game to an unsafe and unsportsmanlike level.…

Imagine a high school athlete, head spinning from tests and quizzes and homework grades, mind swimming with due dates and deadlines, trying not only to balance the hardships high school offers but also juggling his passion of football. Imagine after all his hard work, one of his grades slipped and now he is forced to cut his sport. Do students really deserve this kind of pressure? That is why the no pass, no play rule is a ridiculous rule to follow, since not only does this add extra stress to an average person's head, this rule also completely ignores the fact that students who have learning disabilities and use sports as an escape from their struggles are stripped away of their passion. Sports also has many benefits that not even school can…

Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…

People say that sports can shape a child to become more responsible, kind, and a good team player, although here are some reasons why that statement is wrong. For example, the article, The Negatives of Competitive Sports by Livestrong says, “The intensity of competitive games can lead players to disregard rules,” (T. Marice Huggins, 2017). This explains that sports can cause children to be more defiant, brash, and cocky. This is displayed when kids win sports games. They can become arrogant, thinking that they are better than everyone else.…

Once their child becomes active in a sport, parents typically feel the need to push them further and further until they’re the best one on the team. This is where all of the negative effects, previously discussed, come into play. Even though sports themselves are not a bad thing, parents that force their kids into playing them without their consent is very harmful to the child’s emotional growth. Parents should much rather care about if the kid is having fun rather than if the team wins or loses.
