All players need to have at least a moderate level of fitness as the game requires the players to run around for 80 minutes as well as a reasonable strength ability as it consists of wrestling type contact situations. Rugby players usually partake in regular fitness training sessions and gym training to build and develop strength and fitness capabilities to improve their playing performance. Speed and agility are also somewhat required to play rugby (to varying degrees depending on the position). The sport is extremely physically demanding, therefore it is necessary for the players to be mentally tough to handle the pressures associated with the sport. In terms of nutritional requirements, top rugby players have diets similar to other professional athletes and consume healthy foods high in carbohydrates and protein such as red meats, pasta, potatoes, eggs and oats to ensure they are performing optimally and recover efficiently (Asprey, 2015). Because of the physical contact nature of the game, there are many safety risks associated with playing rugby. Injuries happen in almost every game, with broken bones, dislocations, fractures, strains, sprains and cramps being present most often. Mouth guards are the only compulsory safety gear required to play rugby however, some players like to wear headgear or shoulder pads for extra protection against safety risks.
