Football plays an important role in American culture. Super bowl Sunday in America is like a national holiday. Every year on the first Sunday of February family and friends gather around for a night of food, sports, laughter, and happiness. The streets are empty and the items in the grocery store are all gone. Being created here in America it has been Americans favorite pastime for the last 50 years. When it comes to the sport Americans tend to show by wearing various things such as a jersey, scarf, hat. Etc. Because of the dedicated fans purchases and overpriced game tickets, the NFL alone generates 9.5 billion dollars annually. The fewest an NFL player can get paid is 300,000 dollars while the highest payed player in 2015 makes 19 million dollars a year. That is a lot of money to pay someone just to play a sport. There are injuries in all sports so the players get paid well to compensate for their work. On top of a high salary football player have many other opportunities to further expand their brand. Commercials are always looking for the current athlete to use as their poster boy. State farm for example is currently in a contract with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On top of his of 5 year 105 million dollar contract he has with the Packers he also has a 7.5 million dollar deal with state farm just to do the discount double check commercials we all love. Another football player benefiting from the sport is Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. He has a contract worth 96 million dollars with the Broncos. On top of his staggering earnings from football he has earned an additional 15 million just off of endorsements alone in 2014. Almost 90 percent of all college football scholarship recipients are either middle or lower class. With no other way to afford college and better their self and family many young boys in poverty turn to playing football at the high school level to get recognition from colleges. With the scholarship college football offers to the talented few, they are able to get a full ride which includes dorms and food that their families wouldn’t be able to afford. Also with college football gaining more and more support from Americans annually these 19 and 20 year old players are becoming instant celebrities. Although the NCAA forbids universities from bribing talented high school football players to commit and play for their school, many of the highly rated college football programs are constantly being caught doing it anyways. This helps out the athlete because that money can be used to buy his father a new car or something nice for his mom. Reggie Bush is a great example of this. While playing for USC back in 2005 he was viewed by many as the best player in college football and was expected to go number one in the draft. Before attending college Reggie attended an early college high school which allowed him to get his associates.
