Rugby and Football are often thought of as the same sport, at first glance they look very similar. For example both sports use spheroid shaped balls and the ultimate goal of the game is to score and both sports involve the concept of a limited number of tackles/downs, and in both sports scoring touchdowns/tries takes a clear precedence over goal-kicking. Generally Americans tend to stick to watching football while rugby is mainly supported in Europe. Another huge difference is the level of protection used in both sports in rugby players have virtually no padding or helmets to protect them from blows, where as football the players have shoulder pads,thigh pads,and a helmet all aimed to protect them in the event of a hard hit. When comparing football and rugby it 's important to note the differences in the rules, level of protection, and also the different environments they play in.

Studies have shown, while both sports may cause injuries rugby is known to have much less severe injuries than football. Rugby players suffer more cuts and bruises but football players get concussions, broken bones, torn ligaments and heat-related injuries. Football is played at much higher speeds than rugby is. Injuries are always a big part in the decision of picking sports to play, parents want their kids to be safe and away from as much harm as possible. Also rugby matches are much less time consuming and much easier on the player 's body. Football games can 't last as long as 90 minutes, whereas a rugby match is 40 minutes and hasn 't played nearly as viciously as football is.
