Foods High On The Glycemic Index: Carbohydrates

Energy is the dynamic force that helps with everyday biological functions (Brewer, 2013). The energy that is received throughout the day is affected by the foods consumed such as sugars,carbs, proteins, and other foods ranked on the Glycemic Index. The glycemic index (gi) rates food on a scale of how quickly glucose is released into the body (Brand-MIller, 2014). Foods high on the gi quickly release glucose into the body, while foods low on the gi slowly release sugars over time. When glucose is quickly released into the body a quick “energy burst” occurs (Clarke, 2014). After this “energy burst” would come come a crash leaving one’s energy depleted. An example of foods that would cause these would be tropical fruits, white grains, and sugary desserts (Deforest, 2015). To avoid such extremes one could include a more bounteous amount of complex carbs that are slowly digested (Brewer, 2013). Incorporating different foods ranked differently on the glycemic index in one’s diet will result in a balanced energy level. Most carbohydrates are ranked lowly on the glycemic Index (Denton, 2009). As a result of them being ranked so low carbohydrates are the basis of a healthy diet. However, simple carbs are easier to break down …show more content…
