Introduction Sustaining our food and becoming more efficient with our food waste is a big issue in America. Many tons and pounds of food are wasted every day, these food that are being thrown out are not being disposed effectively. Each time a piece of food is thrown in the trash as well as resources in that food that could be used better making more food. Most don’t realize what they are throwing away when they don’t feel like finishing their meal. Food waste in America is one the largest contributors in landfills. The food waste that ends up in these landfills begins decomposing and eventually producing methane, a greenhouse gas that is very strong. This means all waste including the packaging that goes along with food waste is reduced or completely gone. Which is the main goal, reducing as much waste including packaging all together. In one year Americans can waste over 90 billion pounds of food that is okay to eat. In one day if a small percent of that was recovered that could feed almost 5 million people. The way the “Zero Waste” concept fits in with reduction of food waste and the packaging waste is both are about reducing waste but completely reducing it, both ultimately trying to achieve the same goal using the same techniques. The concept of sustainability has to do with the economy, environment, and the society as well. These three parts directly deal with how we sustain our resources. That is just a general way to define sustainability, to be more specific this is dealing with the resources we use while producing food waste. In this case we must discuss sustaining those resources on a nationwide scale. In chapter 4 of our e-text the definition of sustainable development as developing and achieving the needs of the current population without risking or putting resources of generations to come in harms way. With this being a countrywide issue, the rapid growing population is concerning as well. The Zero Waste system is very useful and can reduce food waste and the waste of packaging that goes along with it. The system works different than the one that is used now which is destroying resources left and right earth is not going to be able to keep up.
