The Importance Of Food Stamp Reform

Improved Essays
Recently I went to my local grocery store and as I was checking out, I saw something that disturbed me. There was a young man in front of me that was paying with an EBT card and was an obvious drug user, as he was displaying his lack of teeth and the sores coving his body. Not only was it the fact he was a substance abuser and paying with food stamps, but the items he was purchasing also troubled me. In his cart he only had junk food that was up to the rim and there was nothing in his buggy that could make a decent meal. Many people look at food stamps to be a wonderful program. However, I believe the food stamp program needs to be reformed, showing it has high cost, fraud and is unlimited.

For example, The Daily Caller reports a story of Adam Sylvain, a Georgia Mason University Student. Sylvain has stated that his roommate told him he applied for food stamps and ended up getting $200 a month (Montogomery). This extra money he was receiving caused him to save over $5,000 in cash each summer. Sylvain also reported that he knew of other college students who were doing the same things. Another problem with fraud is that many people lie. The amount of food stamps a household receives each month depends on the size of the family and income. Some people lie about their income and size of their family to obtain more food stamps. SNAP fraud also happens when SNAP benefits are exchanged for cash. In 2012 close to 1,400 stores were shut down for fraud and nearly 700 stores were indorsed for other violations such as the sale of unqualified items (Payton). Jerome Corsi wrote an example how outrageous people can be when it comes to food stamp fraud by stating in his article:
“In Louisiana, October 14th 2013, police were called to two Walmart stores when there was a temporary power outage in the EBT system, removing spending limits on the food stamp cards. When the word got around that there was no limit, people started rioting in the Walmart’s, stripping the shelves and trashing the place. Wal-Mart discovered shoppers with as little as cents on their food-stamp cards were attempting to steal as much as $700

The items that can be bought with an EBT card is problematic also.
The biggest problem I have with food stamps is what can be purchased with them. According to Food and Nutrition Service, soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers, ice cream, sea food and cakes are food items and therefore can be purchased (Payton). I do not have a problem that an EBT card can buy bread, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy products. However, I do have a problem that junk food can be bought with food stamps. I believe the only food that should be purchased with SNAP benefits is items to make a meal.
In conclusion, SNAP benefits are doing more harm to America than good. The food stamps program is too costly, filled of fraud and overall unfair. It robs people’s chances to improve. There is no doubt that food stamps need to be reformed. The altering of SNAP benefits is just one step closer to making America great

Food stamps are a highly controversial topic in today's society. From the headlining politicians trying to live in the shoes of a low income citizen to the news reporters interviewing them, it is clear that nearly everyone has a different opinion about food stamps. While some reporters remain neutral about the topic, others tend to put their emotion into their interviews and articles regarding the subject. "Lawmakers' Headline-Grabbing Food Stamp Diet" by Jim Geraghty has a far different tone to it than "Too Much of Too Little" and "What It Really Means to Rely on Food Stamps And Welfare" from The Washington Post. Regardless of their differences, the three articles do a proficient job at shining a light on the hunger crisis in America.…

Starting this year, the state Food and Nutrition Services program is beginning to enforce recipients to meet a minimum requirement to receive food stamps. However, in the past, each state has controlled their own requirements for food stamp eligibility. This has created much controversy over the years. Food stamps were originally created to provide enough food to families and individuals in need. Unfortunately there are very few restrictions on the items that can be purchased with food stamps.…

Most Americans assume that welfare is just giving money to the lazy or uneducated, but it is so much more. The welfare program does offer cash assistance for lower income families called TANF, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It also offers SNAP, which is the food and nutrition program or food stamps, along with WIC which offers pregnant mothers as well as infants and children a supplemented way to purchase milk, cheese and other food products that are necessary for a healthy pregnancy or infant. Medicaid health care for those who cannot afford insurance, childcare support for families that cannot afford childcare or that would be unable to work without childcare, Utility or energy assistance for those who need help with their utilities, and finally, vocational rehabilitation services which help families finish their education, teach them a new vocation or just help in job placement. The program is designed to help families better themselves and their situation; the goal is to guide individuals to a path that leads to personal success taking them away and off the welfare programs.…

With the exception of cigarettes and liquor, these items are necessities in my household. I can’t imagine not being able to purchase them with my benefit card. I think it’s unfortunate that the government places restrictions on items that can be purchased with food stamps as I feel that household items are necessity items. In my opinion liquor is not a necessity so I can understand why a person who has food stamps disabled or not, can’t purchase it with food stamps.…

The article titled “Texas replaces food stamps with food cards,” the author talks about a change that the state government made to the food stamp program in 1995. Instead of using paper food stamps, the program started using debit card-like cards. This stopped recipients from being able to trade stamps for other things that SNAP did not regulate or approve, such as black market goods and cash. This was one of the biggest problems with food stamps. Many food stamp recipients were using them to buy illegal goods, which limited their ability to get food for their families.…

Some people walked out with 8-10 carts full of groceries. Although it was only a glitch for a few hours the damage was done. As soon as the system was back up the people still in line left the shopping carts there and left.…

Programs such as SNAP need to be regulated, in that qualifying means to be drug tested and receipts sent in for auditing purchases. In regards to qualifying for social welfare, the “Current Population Survey (CPS) derives the official poverty rate by comparing incomes to the absolute poverty that was calculated back in the 1955 consumption patterns” (Cochran). This rate is absurd, when people apply for benefits the system “counts only cash income” (Cochran). In many situations a family may not qualify for benefits through income, but qualifies after deductions such as medical and healthcare costs, taxes and other work expenses. Too many are dependent on the government funding and decide to stay there.…

Studies have shown that educating low-income consumers about healthier choices through classes does influence their spending choices on healthier options (Kaiser, et al. 2015). However, Vartanian, et al. (2012) reveals the longer children receive SNAP benefits, the risk for higher adult body mass index increases, which leads to increased obesity chances.…
