Food security and nutrition is important in Togo so all residents have safe and nutritious foods to meet their dietary needs and prevent them from disease. Lack of food security leads to malnutrition, which “can result in negative physical outcomes such as inadequate growth, stunting, and wasting, as well as negative impacts on mental development”(Wendland, 2008). Despite the physical effects malnutrition is often “the underlying cause of death from routine infections and parasites”(Wendland, 2008). According to Food and Agriculture Organization, 6% of Togo suffers from malnutrition. Then this domino effect leads Togolese people in need of proper health care practitioners out of luck because “access to services in public hospitals has become something like a lottery. Especially those who have neither health insurance nor cash at hand are doomed to die in this hazardous system – but wealthy people are at risk too” (Falola, 2017). Women are affected by food safety and nutrition the most because they are caretakers and farmers, which increase their risk of disease. Women tend to be more susceptible to disease for various reasons such as exposure to contaminated water from doing household chores, food preparation, and decreased immune system from poor nutrition and delay in seeking care (Gerberding, 2011). Women healthcare is important especially when they are pregnant. Prenatal care is detrimental to ensure a healthy baby. Diseases are transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy.
