Most Scientists are Wrong Are processed foods created by science really healthy? In Michael Pollan’s book, Food Rules, Pollan suggests that science is controlling our dietary choices resulting in poor health. Pollan further suggests that we need to revert to a more traditional diet form. We have become accustomed to trusting scientists and believe what we are told to be true. They went through years of schooling and are trained to do research to come up with the right answers to nagging questions. Their background provides us with confidence in their research and findings, and implement those findings into our daily lives. This is where Pollan comes in, he suggests that science doesn 't actually know much about nutrition, and that nutritional …show more content…
You may ask what the traditional diet is and how it’s different from the Western diet. It’s simple really, the traditional diet is what your ancestors lived by. It’s food that’s not processed, comes directly form the earth, and does’t have a label or a nutritional chart stating the ingredients in it. Pollan refers to the traditional way of eating in most of his rules. Pollan looked to the French, the Japanese, the Italians, and the Greeks (Pollan 89). He knows that these people still hold traditions close to their hearts which must include traditional diets. These people all have one thing in common, they have all eaten what there mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers have eaten. If you plopped a French grandmother in present day France they would be able to eat as they did when they were alive and young. On the other hand, if you put them in America they would lose their mind trying to figure out what all of this new and weird food is. We might know that a traditional diet is just a continuation of past diets but do we know exactly what was in that diet, no. What we do have is a deep understanding of the basic ingredients that make up the foods. They often use vegetables, fruits, and whole grain. The cuisine also is high in fat, carbs, and protein. The main point that makes these items healthy is that they aren 't processed like our food is. Fats and carbs are okay as long as they aren 't substituted with fake fat. Creating a substitution for another item is never okay. It’s always better to eat the real thing in small proportions than the fake version is a large
