My project goal is to ensure every student has a meal to celebrate with for a Thanksgiving dinner this year. I have been in contact with local shelters and supermarkets in my town. Through contact with them, I will be able to provide each family with a holiday meal: a ham, vegetables (including green beans and potatoes), macaroni and cheese, rolls, and other canned goods. There are current U.S. programs designed to ameliorate the issue of inadequate food access to the rural elderly, each being major contributors in meeting the needs of this population, but likewise facing limitations common to all non-profits, and common to the issue itself. I contribute to both my high school and community through volunteer work. These volunteer services include altar serving at my local Catholic church, and assisting in packaging canned goods for the less fortunate at a local food pantry. Individually and coorpaterly we were able to sort a total of 13,109 pounds of food and provided 8,400 meals. We were able to prepare donations for distribution to over 600 non-profit agencies in metro Atlanta and North Georgia area. I worked together with other volunteers in order to sort, inspect and pack quality groceries. Despite huge agricultural surpluses in the United States, food insecurity remains a massive and constant problem for millions of low-wage households. The concept of a Community Supported Agriculture was created for those who didn’t have access to regular resources to purchase food. This has largely to do with the fact that most areas are known as what we call a food desert. Every week this past summer I spent eight hours volunteering in Parkview 's outpatient pharmacy. My responsibilities included: restocking over the counter medications, organizing filled prescriptions, and assisting customers with their transactions. Through volunteering I met some outstanding mentors and felt as if I really made a difference to the employee’s at Parkview and the patients they treat.
