Food Pantry Narrative

I have found myself in charge of a multitude of projects in my short seventeen years of life. Many of the people whom I have worked with tell me, quite frequently, that my maturity is beyond my years. I usually would not agree with them, but now realize why they would have that impression. I started volunteering at the North Dearborn Food Pantry during my freshman year of high school as a way to spend time with my grandpa, but it evolved over time. When I first began, I only worked two times a week for 8 hours total and now I work three times a week for a total of 14 hours. My work must have been proved in order to move up in position at the pantry. In the first year, I was able to move from assisting in putting out the produce to taking patrons around the line to select groceries. My responsibilities have included: knowing how the computer is run, helping run special holiday events, and being able to open if volunteers are unable to show up. When new volunteers have questions, they are usually sent to me to give them a tour of the services we offer to the community. It is strange to think of how much I have done to help people in my community and I hope to be able to continue that kind of work throughout the rest of my life. This kind of work may not provide the monetary benefit that students are in desire of, but it fulfills a part of myself that wants to help others. Giving back to my community is the least that I can do. I may not have money to give, but helping those in need by spending my time helping at the food pantry is my opportunity. In my current position, I direct our patrons to the help they need and provide an ear that listens to their problems. The help that I provide directly affects their lives.
