Analyzing Food Labels

Improved Essays
This paper will be comparing the nutrition labels of a select few food products that I have in my kitchen and will go in detail about the label, serving size, cost, total carbohydrates, fats, sodium, and proteins in each product. I will also be comparing to see which food product would be the healthier option if you had to decide between the two food products.
Analyzing Breakfast foods
The first food product that I decided to compare is one that I eat on a day-to-day basis for breakfast: Quaker apples and cinnamon instant oatmeal. This box of oatmeal has a serving size of 1 packet (43 grams) and consists of 10 packets of oatmeal altogether; there are 160 calories per serving. The cost of this food product is $2.50 at Walmart but prices may

The serving size for a Coca Cola is 1 can that contains 12 fluid ounces and each serving contains 140 calories. In addition, the amount of carbohydrates in a Coca Cola is 39 grams, which uses 13% of your daily values. Also, Coca Cola does not contain any grams of fat. The amount of sodium one serving contains is 45 milligrams, which is 2% of your daily values, and Coca Cola contains 0 grams of protein. While comparing the labels of the Welch’s white grape juice and the Coca Cola soft drink I was surprised at how similar the amount of carbohydrates, fats, sodium, and protein on the labels were. Both of these beverages contain 39 grams of carbohydrates, both don’t contain any grams of fat, and the juice contained only 1 more gram of protein than the can of soda did. Furthermore, the major difference I found while comparing the two beverages was the amount of sodium in the Coca Cola was more than twice the amount of the fruit juice (the fruit juice containing 20 milligrams of sodium and the soda containing 45 milligrams of sodium). Due to this information I believe that the fruit juice is only slightly the healthier choice between these two beverages but overall drinking water in replacement of soft drinks and fruit juices is the best option. According to the http://www.uwhealthkids.org/ it is a myth that fruit juice is better for you than soda and that they are fairly equal in sugar content. This information I found to be true as the Welch’s fruit juice contains 37 grams of sugar and the Coca Cola contains 39 grams of

I would choose the food associated with label 2 more often. This is because it contains 15% of calcium and label 1 contains 0%. This indicates that this food product is more beneficial for the individual since it provides an important mineral. This allows bone health to be maintained and could reduce the risk of complications in the future (Smolin et al., 2015). Also, looking at the sodium content, it is much lower compared to label 1.…

Instead of trying to ban things, there should be more education about the downfalls of drinking soda and other sugary substances. In just 10 teaspoons of coca cola, there are 140 calories and 40 grams of sugar, and in 9.8 teaspoons of apple juice there are 165 calories and 39 grams of sugar. Others may make the argument that while fruit juice can be just as sugary as soda, they are filled with other benefits that soda does not have. For example, orange juice contains Vitamin C, Potassium, and Antioxidants (Gunners). While most juice has some benefits that soda may not possess, it contains misleading ingredients that are unhealthy for your body.…
