For the home language survey, I would ask several questions that address the parents, such as their primary language, the language they use to communicate to their child, and the first language the students spoke when they started talking. I would send this survey home on the first day of the school year, along with the parent letter. The survey would provide me from the very beginning of the school year with my students’ linguistic strengths and weaknesses, and what kind of support for language is offered at home. This would also help the parents to be involved and informed about my class and build a good communication and relationship between me and the parents. I would use also IEP and student files in order to learn about my students’ linguistic background. These record provide me with accurate report of my students’ past challenges and current level of language skill. Records such as state testing and district language tests are very helpful to know more about the students’ languages levels. I would use these records because it is considered to be a third party perspective and observation, rather than a student or parent’s viewpoints that might be a little inaccurate.
