Both the male and female freshman basketball teams of St. Francis Xavier High School, a local high school, were sampled in the experiment. The high school freshman population was chosen because freshman are typically unexposed to the underlying purpose of the experiment like many upperclassmen may be from higher classes. This could alter the results and the natural human response to the situation may not be shown. Twenty-one total students participated, eleven males and ten females. The participants consisted of students between the ages of fourteen and fifteen.

The experiment utilized five different colors of food coloring which all have common flavor associations: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue. Several clear plastic cups were used to distribute the samples to the participants to provide a maximum perception of the color of the drink. To accompany the colors, five different flavors of flavored water were used. Fruit2o and Propel, brands of flavored water was used in the flavors of Strawberry, Grape, Orange, Lemon, and Cherry. In order to create the samples and have an even color for each sample, six pitchers and six spoons were used to create the solutions to be tested. Sheets with the samples listed in order and space to fill in the flavor tasted were given, along with a writing utensil, to the participants to record the results of the experiment (Appendix B). Saltine crackers were also provided for the participants to rule out any flavors of the previous drink that may have lingered in the mouth. Additionally, a permission slip was handed out prior to the experiment to ensure consent and

An experiment was carried out to determine the percent of 100 percent cranberry juice in cranberry apple juice. This experiment is significant in everyday chemistry because it is the job of many chemists, in regulatory agencies such as the FDA, to quantitatively determine if the ingredients listed on the label of a substance are actually in that substance. Cranberry juice has particular qualities that are not found in other juices. The quality studied in this experiment was color. Cranberry apple juice is a mixture, but, because it is said to contain cranberry juice, it should also have some of the same unique identifying quality, color, that cranberry juice has.…

The press release "Black Coffee Drinkers More Likely to be Psychopaths: Study" written by Emma Prestwich and Jay W. Belle Isle is very misleading and inaccurate as it misrepresents the content of the original article "Bitter Taste Causes Hostility" in a variety of ways. The first way the press release misrepresents the original studies done by Christina Sagioglou and Tobias Greitemeyer, is by stating the wrong number and kinds of participants. The press release states that there were 1000 students as well as prison inmates that took part in this study. However, the original article states that only 75 students took a part in experiment 1, 44 in experiment 2, and 164 in experiment 3, as there were 3 experiments conducted and not just one, and…

The Determining Food Dye Content Lab was less serious since it wasn’t examining the hazards of blue-1 food dye and yellow-5 food dye, but the process and information was useful and interesting. The food dyes were confirmed through the use of a spectrometer, and the creation of different concentrations for each food dye allowed for the recreation of the original Gatorade’s concentration. The wavelength and absorbance were collected to create a calibration curve using Beer’s law to determine the…

What prompted my research and purpose? Ideas, because the experiment idea came from a book called “ Science Fair Ideas for DUMMIES”. This idea was significance for me because I have wondered whether a bottled water from a store or filtered water would get out or prevent any stains. But, most of all I chose this experiment, because I thought it was interesting to do and I am interested in this project. My hypothesis was “Filtered water would prevent stains” because it’s more thoroughly clean than the bottled water.…

In discussion of youth sports and the benefits associated, one controversial issue has been improving the developmental benefits while decreasing the risks associated. On the one hand, research provides evidence surrounding the numerous developmental benefits associated with youth sports participation. On the other hand, research provides us with the risks involved with youth sports if certain precautionary measures are not addressed. However, more strict regulations placed on youth practice times and rule changes for competitive games, if implemented correctly, can greatly decrease the risks involved in youth sports and further improve the benefits already associated. Others have even maintained that youth sports, despite the risks involved,…
