The purpose of the Determining Food Dye Content Lab was to identify the food dye coloring in green apple Gatorade, and determine the dye’s concentration to ultimately recreate a solution containing the same concentration of dyes as the original. To determine the concentration of the dyes present in the green apple Gatorade, a spectrometer was used to measure the wavelengths and absorbance values for the given dyes. A sample of the green apple Gatorade was tested in the spectrometer to measure its absorption and compare the values collected to stock dyes provided in lab. The data displayed that the green apple Gatorade contained blue-1 food dye because the Gatorade’s wavelength at peak one was 422.3 Nm, and blue-1 food dye’s peak one was 423.7+-.1.5 …show more content…
There has been an association that links food dyes and hyperactivity in children (2). It is interesting to think about the need to use unnatural substances to give food the appearance of something natural. Both blue-1 food dye and yellow-5 food dye are permitted in the United States. In a study done by Southampton University, five of the allowed food colors in the United States are linked to ADHD, cancer, and other health conditions in Europe (2). Research is now showing that there isn’t a logical reason to used artificial dyes in food because of the negative effect these dyes can cause to human’s health. The Determining Food Dye Content Lab was less serious since it wasn’t examining the hazards of blue-1 food dye and yellow-5 food dye, but the process and information was useful and interesting. The food dyes were confirmed through the use of a spectrometer, and the creation of different concentrations for each food dye allowed for the recreation of the original Gatorade’s concentration.
