The Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK) mission statement is to help alleviate hunger in Kern County through the distribution of emergency food provided by public, private and government donations, to households who are in need of emergency food assistance. (CAPK Website, n.d.).
One of the major strengths of the CAPK Food Bank is distributing 7.8 million pounds of food per year to the food insecure residents of Kern County. According to the Food Research and Action Center’s (FRAC) Food Hardship in America 2016 report identified Bakersfield as seventh among the 100 largest metropolitan cities in the U.S. for food insecurity (FRAC, 2016). The food bank has a great partnership with the community for donations of food from businesses with overage or day old breads, fruits and vegetables as well as from the farmers during summer harvest season. Currently the obesity rate is 78% (CFPA, 2014) having a P/CHN at the food distribution sites providing information on exercise, dietary education, easy recipes for cooking, healthy food choices with the available foods given such as produce and fruits will encourage healthier eating habits striving to lower the obesity rate. One way to evaluate for effectiveness is to hear feedback from the community what did they like about the last healthy cooking classes, recipes, and are they feeling healthier. Ultimately, the obesity rate should drop in percentage to evaluate statistically if this intervention is working (HP, 2010).
