Peg Tyre’s article helps express the evolution of teaching literacy with an emphasis on the recent change and experiment in the public school New Dorp located within Staten Island, New York. Tyre interviewed staff throughout different departments and the principal to understand where they started and where they were heading to in education. At New Dorp, Principal Deirdre DeAngelis attempted to improve the school’s test scores in multiple ways; firing bad staff, finding funding to break the school into smaller learning communities, and finding sponsors to help create after-school programs to aid in literacy. However, as nothing seemed to work, she turned to how the teachers incorporated writing into all of the classes throughout the day. The…

The readings of this week distinguish two literacies; vernacular and dominant. According to Barton and Hamilton (in Purcell-Gates, Jacobson, & Degener, 2004) vernacular literacy refer to the informal learned literacies rooted in every day experiences and serve every day purposes. This type of practices increase vernacular knowledge and are usually less valued by society. On the other hand, dominant literacies concern to education, law, religion and the workplace. These literacies are high valued regarding legal and cultural issues.…

Reading is such a focal part of my life that I sometimes lose sight of the fact that many people can't do it. Aside from the more practical and obvious benefits of a more literate society, those who can read and write suddenly have a way to change their lives and their world. Literacy is a prerequisite to an education, and receiving an education is a way for those living in poverty to change their…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…

I became involved with Hospice in June of 2011 after my swim coach Keith Furey came to the end of his 10-year battle with cancer and was home with Hospice care. I have founded, and am president of the Nyack High School chapter named “Teens for Hospice” that is a satellite group of “Youth for Hospice” of which I am also a member. I want to continue to bring awareness to my fellow student body and Teens of Rockland County, about how we can contribute, support and help this specialized team of people who give choice, dignity, courage, and hope to people and continue to educate them that every little bit of effort counts, to make a difference, and that they can be part of a even bigger picture. I want to establish a club that will remain in place after I graduate, to continue fundraising, and be there as a support group for kids in families who are dealing with a serious illness in our school and community. Most of all to let kids know what Hospice is really about, unless they have had first hand experience in their lives most are ignorant to what it is, the services it offers, the comfort it brings, and the fun ways to raise money for such a worthy cause, for example Dance a thon, Haunt for Hospice, Hugs for Hospice, Bounce for Hospice and many…

A great way for a library to raise money is to allow different proposals for different fundraisers, specifically two different proposals which a committee representing the community will decide which is the most logistically feasible. The two fundraisers the committee will take into account are a proposal for a library book sale and a proposal for a carwash. Though the book sale and the carwash have their similarities and differences, the carwash is the most reliable fundraiser to generate more funds for the library. The library book sale and carwash have many similarities.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. Literacy has now been a national focus and is receiving the attention that is requiring for students to become successful.…
