The mission of Fond du Lac Literacy Services is to affect community wide-change by improving literacy skills and increasing literacy awareness in Fond du Lac County. Our organization exists to teach adults the skills needed to survive and thrive in society such as reading, mathematics, writing, and learning English. Our vision is to see that everyone in Fond du Lac will have the literacy skills to help them succeed and survive in today’s world. which is a nonprofit that offers community literacy programs in seventy six different locations throughout Wisconsin. Clients that we serve are currently anywhere from 18 to 75 years of age. Several volunteers take time out of their busy schedules to assist us and tutor clients in literacy skills. Our partners that aid in making our mission a success include Family Resource Center of Fond du Lac, Advocap, Bank of Oakfield, Boys and Girls, Brooke Industries, Meriter Hospital, Wisconsin Area Health Education Centers, Wisconsin Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and Wisconsin Technical College System. Fond du Lac Literacy Services also receives support from Fond du Lac Area United Way, the Sadoff Family Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Fond du Lac, Holy Family Catholic Community, Mid-States Aluminum Foundation, Michels Corporation, and Altrusa. In the last year the organization has currently assisted over 71 adults with the help of volunteers. Fond du Lac Literacy Services has supported many adults and families within the Fond du Lac community by bettering their literacy, survival, and work skills. Clients within our organization learn how to read, write, and speak English. Volunteers are essential in helping Fond du Lac Literacy Services mission. Volunteers attend training to become tutors and then they are placed with specific clients depending upon needs, goals, and availability. Our Literacy specialist and coordinator, who have been trained in education, ensure all volunteers are knowledgeable of what they are teaching clients. While working with tutors clients learn how to balance their checkbooks, how to budget, how to pay bills, how to read, and how to have effective communication at work. Clients will also come to our organization to improve upon their reading and writing abilities so they can obtain their GED for school, receive a better job, and to earn their driver’s licenses. Many parents come to the organization who can’t read books, but want to read to their children. We teach various skills like these to our clients. Fond du Lac Literacy Services will travel to see and tutor clients who are incarcerated. Our organization also helps individuals within the community who can’t speak English to learn it as a second
