Followership And Servant Leadership Analysis

Improved Essays
When comparing both Followership and Servant Leadership you can see that one grows and emerges to become the other. As junior soldiers to be effective followers we must be able to think critically about situations to create solutions and to share ideas with each other and our leadership. As leaders we must give others a chance to be heard, we should allow our soldiers to come up with ideas of there own to help the mission and to take steps in developing themselves into the future leaders they will be.
Although followership and leadership go hand in hand they are still two different sides to a coin. As a servant leader there are many different characteristics you should have. These characteristics are important for developing and mentoring

In previous assignments, I distinguished between authentic and servant leadership approaches. Authentic leadership focuses on qualities that help leaders to be perceived as trustworthy and believable by their followers (Northouse, 2012). One of the many strengths of authentic leadership is that it fulfills a need for trustworthy leadership (Northouse, 2012). According to Northouse (2012), servant leaders put followers first, empower them, and help them develop their full personal capacity. A study conducted by Burton, Peachey, and Wells (2017) evaluates the role of servant leadership in creating and maintaining a more ethical climate within collegiate sports. With scandals such as Jerry Sandusky's sexual misconduct at Penn State, academic scandals in various schools, sexual misconduct at Baylor, Maimi and others, it leads one to realize the collegiate sports culture needs a drastic overhaul. I see leadership not as one person forcibly moving another in the direction of one person’s desired outcome. I look at my leadership role not in a hierarchical manner with me demanding excessively from my employees but rather in a collegial way. Servant leadership places a leader hand-in-hand with the people he/ she is serving, walking alongside to achieve a common goal. The common objective for my servant leadership involves recognizing the needs of my peers, helping them to bring out their own strengths, and ultimately bringing the members of an organization towards…

I have spent eight years as an Army Officer and as a junior leader, I didn’t feel that my position was as important as those placed into higher leadership positions. Frequently, all the credit of my hard work was given exclusively to higher-level leadership. The military embraces and creates Authoritarian leaders that direct others through commands, downward communication and punitive criticism (Marquis & Huston, 2015). I have learned that servant leadership embraces community and emphasizes the importance of all members of an organization. It can be applied to all organizations and not just non-profits, religious affiliated institutions and community focused workplaces.…

Dr. Freeborough, With every passing week, I am gaining a clearer understanding of the principles of servant leadership and how these principles can be applied within my current role in my organization as well as how they can be applied in other settings. I found it interesting how even though recent research supports the use of servant leadership it is still not utilized in more often in today's workplaces (Heskett, 2013). Research from Linuesa-Langreo & Ruiz-Palomino (2016), showed that the use of servant leadership increased creativity and empowerment within the organizational culture, thus leading to improved productivity. While I still question the rational behind organizational leaders not utilizing servant leadership principles more…

While looking through the resources provided for this section it was interesting to see Bommelje quoting Robert Greenleaf, where he says a servant leader seeks first to serve, “then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.” That was very profound because if I look back at my career to where I am now, becoming a leader was a natural step. My desire to serve others moved me toward a leadership role, where I could be a mentor to others and a student to those that I respect and seek knowledge and mentorship. One thing I have discovered about myself is…
