A foil is one character that contrasts with another character to emphasize similar qualities between them. A foil is usually a secondary character that contrasts to the protagonist. In Crime and Punishment, Raskolnikov has at least two foils, Sonya and Svidrigailov. Both Sonya and Raskolnikov are poverty stricken, which consequently caused them to ruin their lives.
